Soccer Falls to No. 5 Texas A&M 4-2
October 14, 2007 | Soccer
COLLEGE STATION - After taking a two-goal lead in to halftime, the University of Colorado women's soccer team fell to the fifth-ranked Texas A&M Aggies 4-2 here on Sunday afternoon.
A&M nearly got on board early, when Laura Robinson penetrated into the box on an Aggie attack Robinson put space between her and the ball, when Colorado defender Mary White blocked Robinson's off of the path, allowing CU goal keeper Kirstin Radlinski to collect the ball.
The Aggies continued to penetrate the stingy CU defense, until the Buffaloes got their first opportunity to score in the 16th minute. Freshman Michaela DeJesus took a cross from sophomore Nikki Marshall at the top of the 18-yard box. DeJesus took the ball and sent the ball just over the top of the crossbar.
The Buffs would have another chance later, when the ball was played across the CU frontline to Marshall, who sent a shot to the right side of the frame, only to be saved by the Aggie goal keeper and Colorado native, Kristin Arnold. Arnold punted the ball to midfield. The A&M defense played up, allowing senior Allison Kidd to take the ball just inside the box. Kidd sent a high, screaming shot that went just over Arnold, putting the Buffaloes up 1-0 in the 28th minute.
Colorado would strike again in the 43rd minute, again, when Arnold cleared ball to the middle of the pitch. The ball was knocked around by CU midfield, ending up at the foot of CU's Nikki Keller, who passed the ball through to Marshall. Marshall took the ball and split in-between two Aggie defenders before beating the Aggie keeper with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal. Marshall's goal marked her eighth score on the season and her fourth-consecutive game with a goal, tying her own school record in that category.
After the first half, both keepers recorded two saves apiece, while A&M out-shot Colorado 9-5.
A&M came out very aggressive in first five minutes of the half, as they looked to get back on track when Pistorius fired a bullet at Radlinski, who punched the attempt over the goal. Radlinski had to make several big plays early on in the half, including two saves. The Aggies won two corner kicks, in which Radlinski denied a cross on one and possible shot opportunities on the next.
The tenacity of the Aggies finally paid off for A&M, when Melissa Garey scored on a shot taken inside the box in the 66th minute. The ball went just to the outside of the Buffalo defense and skipped past a diving Radlinski and into the back of the net to put the score at 2-1.
Just four minutes later, the Aggies sliced through the CU midfield and defense with pinpoint passing and movement, as Pistorius equalized the game at 2-2.
In the 73rd minute, A&M took the lead on a corner kick sent in by Pistorius. The crossed ball found the head of Amber Gnatzig in the middle of the pack, headed the ball in to the goal. The Aggies would score another goal in the game, from Rachel Shipley, putting the final score at 4-2.
The Buffs will return to Big 12 action next weekend in Boulder, as they take on the University of Kansas on Friday at 3 p.m. and the University of Missouri on Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior Day will be held before the Missouri game, with the Buffaloes honoring seniors Brittany Dornseif and Allison Kidd.
