Soccer Battles to a 1-0 Win Over OSU
October 28, 2007 | Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. - The University of Colorado women's soccer team won their second consecutive road conference game as junior Alex Cousins netted her second goal in as many games to give Colorado the 1-0 win over Oklahoma State here Sunday.
"The game on Friday was joy and the game today was relief," said head coach Hempen. "After the effort that these kids expended on Friday, we started today half full and now we're half empty. I can't emphasize enough how draining it is to play the Sunday afternoon game in this conference. Every kid did their part and it was a complete team effort out here today."
With the win, the Buffs improve to 9-6-3 on the season and 5-4-0 in Big 12 action and are now guaranteed a spot in the Big 12 Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
Oklahoma State outshot the Buffaloes 10 to three in the first half, but CU managed to put two of their shots on goal in comparison to OSU's one.
The second half of play started out physical and Oklahoma State worked their way into the Colorado defense in the 68th minute. Cowgirl forward, Adriane Radtke fired a shot at Buffalo goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski, but Radtke was no match as Radlinski came away from the pressure with a save.
Just seconds later, Colorado was able to transition up the field and the Buffaloes gained possession at the top of the Cowgirl box. Junior midfielder Alex Cousins managed to fight off the OSU defense and send a shot towards the goal from 18 yards out that went high over the goalkeepers head and in to the back of the net to give Colorado the 1-0 lead with 22 minutes to play.
The goal, which proved to be the game-winner, was Cousins' second tally in as many games as she also scored an almost identical goal in Friday's win over Oklahoma. After her performance this weekend, Cousins is now tied with teammate Gianna DeSaverio as the second leading scorer on the team with three goals, two assists and eight points.
"Alex hit a perfect shot into the back side netting of their goal and it was great," said head coach Bill Hempen. "Her shot was unassisted and was just a great individual effort."
Despite trailing 1-0, the Cowgirls would not give up in the second half of play. They finished the game outshooting the Buffs 16 to seven and had four corner kick opportunities to Colorado's one. CU was led offensively by freshman Michaela DeJesus with three shots, all of which were on goal.
"In the beginning of the game a lot of us felt tired from Friday's battle," said Cousins. "It was tough to get our legs going but we started to play hard and string together good passes. The defense was working hard and once we scored we believed that we could keep it 1-0. We played a little more defensive, but we were able to get all the balls out and keep them from scoring."
"Our defense did a great job," said Hempen. "Once we got our goal, it was pretty much them having the ball the rest of the game. We tried to get it going again but we couldn't hold on. So many kids played in the back today and it wasn't just one group. It was a great win."
Despite the Cowgirls' pressure, the Buffaloes managed to shutdown OSU's offensive attempts and rack up their second-consecutive Big 12 win. With the victory, Colorado moves to fifth place in the Big 12 standings, along with Kansas, with 15 points.
Next week, the Buffs will travel to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns in the final regular season game on Friday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. MDT.
"As a team, we don't care about standings," said Cousins. "We try not to think about how a win could position us in the Big 12 standings, because we just want to keep on winning these games from here on out. It's important to us to keep what we have going instead of worrying about statistics and we are looking to keep this momentum and carry it into the Big 12 Tournament."
