Women's Golf Climbs to Sixth at Big 12 Championship

April 18, 2007 | Women's Golf

WACO, Texas ? The University of Colorado women's golf team bounced back from their difficult second round to post the fourth-best team score of the day here at the final round of the 2007 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship on Wednesday at Ridgewood Country Club.

CU shot 307 for the round, their best team round of the tournament and second-best in school history at a Big 12 Tournament.  The 307 score was an improvement of 17 strokes from Tuesday's 324. Colorado finished with a 308-324-307-939.

“I am proud of the way we made a good comeback today,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly.  “We didn't get off to the best start but they really got it going when they made the turn.  We had some people paying really, really well and it was a tough course. Overall they made a very good comeback and they were determined to respond and they did it.   I'm very pleased with the turnaround and we are disappointed we missed fourth by a few shots. Yesterday just buried us and so lesson learned. You cannot throw away shots because you throw away opportunities at great things.  Everyone learned you cannot lose your concentration even for one moment especially in a field this strong.”

No. 14 Texas A&M walked away with the team championship for the second-straight year with a 296 final round and a 300-315-296-911 total.  They were followed by No. 11 Oklahoma State (916), No. 36 Baylor (918), Nebraska (936) and Oklahoma (937). Kansas' Amanda Costner was the medalist with a 71-73-77-221 total.  She held off a furious charge from defending champion Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M, whose 71 nearly reeled in Costner.  Knoll finished with a 74-79-71-224 for second place.

As for CU, junior Lindsay Senger had the best round of the tournament for the Buffaloes, shooting a one-over par 73. She was one under par with three holes to play, but a double bogey on No. 8 set her back two shots.  It was the third best score of the day for any player in the field.  Her improvement was eight shots from Tuesday's 81 to today and the 73 is her best round in a Big 12 Tournament.  She finished in a tie for 20th with a total of 80-81-73-234 and was CU's top finisher in the individual standings.

“Her start wasn't the best but she made a great birdie on 16 that was almost a hole in one,” said Kelly.  “That got her going. She made par on 17 and then three putted for par on 18 which made her mad.  She made the turn and took a look at the board and that time we weren't doing great. So she bogeyed one and then proceeded to go birdie-par for six straight holes and then stumbled on eight.  On nine she hit the best five iron I've ever seen her hit; it was a tour-quality shot.  The pin was tough and the hazards around the hole were in play.  It was a gutsy shot and because of that she almost birdied the hole.”

“I started off rough with bogeys out of the gate and then a good birdie on 13 and got things going,” said Senger.  “Then to make a birdie on 16, which had haunted our entire team all week, got me some momentum.  I bogeyed number one from the trees and then chipped in on two and then made par on three, which had been brutal all week.  I got my putter going for the first time all season really and it paid off.  Everyone went into today looking to have fun and relax. Everyone plays their best when they're just having fun.”

Senior Hannah Hoch had her most difficult round of the tournament with an eight-over par 80.  She finished her final Big 12 Tournament in a tie for 26th place with a 76-79-80-235 total.

“I'm a little disappointed in my score today,” said Hoch.  “I didn't feel like I was playing terrible I just couldn't buy a putt. It was frustrating, but it could have been a lot worse.”

Sophomore Lindsay Caljouw shot an 83 in her final round, her worst round of the year.  She still managed to finish 31st with a three day score of 76-79-83 238.  She was ninth a year ago.

Showing massive improvement were Buff freshmen Julie Kim and Dominique Pytlewski.  Both shot their worst collegiate rounds on Tuesday with an 88 and 85, respectively, but righted whatever was wrong Wednesday.  Kim improved to a four-over par 76, a 12 stroke swing and 36th place, while Pytlewski shot 78, an eight shot difference, and finished 50th.  Their performances were pivotal in CU's turnaround from their worst round of the year on Tuesday to a respectable showing Wednesday.

“I think that the comeback speaks to the players on this team,” said Hoch of her young teammates.  “No one has any quit. Maybe it doesn't mean a lot to the people that don't know about the tournament, going from ninth to sixth. We know it's not an easy thing to do. I wouldn't say we're proud of sixth, but we're proud we rallied.  The round today...it's not an easy course and Julie and Domi turning it around and Senger having an awesome day wasn't anything easy.  They picked up for me and Caljouw today so this was a total team effort.”

“I think both of them (Kim and Pytlewski) had swing issues yesterday and combined with being in trouble yesterday basically that all added up to a bad day altogether,” said Senger.  “Today they played well enough to shoot a score to help the team.  They are hitting the ball better; just yesterday exposed what was wrong.  Today they stayed patient and learned from all the wind in Colorado. It was a good experience for both of them.”

The regular season is now over and the Buffaloes will wait for May 1, when the field for the NCAA Regionals will be announced.  CU has never sent a team to regionals, and just one individual, Erin Kerr, has been selected at-large.

“We couldn't be more of a bubble team for NCAA's,” said Kelly.  “We don't find out for awhile, but we're 50-50 and we hope they will lean our way. I hope they took a good hard look at what we did today.  We are the only team in the Big 12 in the west region and we beat some teams ranked higher than us. I'm hoping the last round today will get us a look.”
