Pifer Leads Buffs In Oregon

April 21, 2007 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. ? Senior Stephen Pifer won the 1,500-meter run on Friday night, April 20, at the Oregon Invitational at Hayward Field in the top section. Pifer won the race in a regional qualifying mark of 3:41.77 in just his first competition of the outdoor season, ending the race with a 58.7 split.

“I thought it went pretty well,” Pifer said. “It was my fastest opener in the 1500 and my first race of the year. I wish it would have been a little faster, but I think it was pretty good indication of what kind of shape I am in and things to come.”

The time was the fourth fastest in school history, trailing only Alan Culpepper (3:39.77) and two of Pifer's own marks of 3:40.51 and 3:40.70.

Pifer defeated Oregon's Andrew Acosta (3:42.40) and Wisconsin's Craig Miller (3:42.67).

Senior Anthony Chiulli took 11th in the same section of the 1,500. He crossed the finish in 3:49.55.

In section B of the 1,500, senior Daniel Kenney placed fifth overall. He crossed the tape at 3:56.27. Freshmen Matt Herzl and Dan Edwards came in 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Herzl recorded a mark of 3:59.75 and Edwards came in at 4:00.26.

Junior Greg Castro placed 19th in his section of the 5,000-meters. He recorded a personal record in 15:23.60.

The Buffs head to the Cardinal and Wyoming Invites next weekend.
