Women's Golf Sixth at BYU Dixie Classic
April 03, 2007 | Women's Golf
ST GEORGE, Utah ? The University of Colorado women's golf team saw its top player withdraw halfway through the first round of play and still managed a sixth place start to their tournament at the BYU Dixie Classic here Monday at the Entrada at Snow Canyon.
The Buffs shot 304-307-611 for the day, good for sixth place in the standings behind five teams ranked in the top 50 in the country. Host BYU leads the tournament with a 295-295-590 total, followed by TCU (298-298-596), Denver (298-299-597), UC Irvine (296-311-607), Arizona (303-307-610) and the Buffs.
“It's a great golf course because it is a great test, it's the hardest course we've played this year,” said CU head coach Anne Kelly. “It's a very tough golf course and the last four holes are like playing on the moon it's all lava rock under the grass. We have handled it about the same as everyone else, and I'm proud of that. The practice we had over spring break really helped us.”
Sophomore Lindsay Caljouw, the team's stroke average leader this season, had to withdraw after 12 holes due to illness, but the Buffs did a good job of responding.
Junior Lindsay Senger had the best outing for the Buffaloes, shooting a 75-75-150 for a tie for 11th place in the standings after two rounds. She had a “Jekyll and Hyde” day, shooting one under par on the front nine for the day but seven over on the back nine, which was playing as the harder set for the field.
“The back nine really isn't as hard as it's scoring, but I just had a mental breakdown in both rounds,” said Senger. “I had a stretch of four bogeys in a row that killed me and it wasn't that I was hitting poor shots. It was just not the best course management, you need to not be above the hole and I was both rounds. I actually had good bogeys but you can't do that. I like the front; I was able to aim at a lot of pins, I was striking the ball better on the front with good angles. The thing is I like the back better but I'm playing the front better.”
Freshman Dominique Pytlewski had a great day except for one hole in each round. In the first round, she played her first eight holes to even par, but on the par five 17th hole she struggled to a quadruple-bogey nine and finished that round with a 77. In the second round she was just two-over par with one hole to play thanks to 10 straight pars to open the round. A bogey on the par four seventh hole, her last of the day, pushed her total to 75 for the round and a total of 152. She is tied for 13th in the overall standings.
Classmate Julie Kim had an experience similar to Senger, as she played the first nine holes to one over for the day, but the back nine gave her trouble as she was eight over. Kim shot 75 in the first round, followed by a 78 in the second. She suffered the same fate as Pytlewski, posting a double-bogey on her final hole of the day with a six on the par four fourth hole.
Senior Hannah Hoch rounded out the scoring for Colorado, shooting a five-over 77 in the morning round followed by a 79 in the afternoon. She had the best go of the day for CU on the back nine, shooting even par in the morning. Classmate Lindsay Koth also played the tournament as an individual, shooting 83 in the morning but bouncing back with a 77 in the evening round.
“It was a very long day today but we are looking forward to tomorrow,” said Kelly. “We've been out for 14 hours, and it is tough when you only have four players. Senger had a great day today and she missed eight putts under 10 feet for birdie today. Everything else was working for her today. This is a good and competitive field and I'm proud of them and looking forward to tomorrow.”
“Everyone struggled with putting today but we need to be realistic about what we want to do,” said Senger. “Big 12's are coming up and we have to go into that with confidence and that starts tomorrow.”
The tomorrow she speaks of will tee off at 8 a.m. at Entrada. Buff fans can follow all the action at www.golfstat.com
