Belassi Advances at ITA Regional

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ? University of Colorado junior Camila Belassi won her third match in a row and her eighth match of the fall season with a straight-set win over Laryssa Ferreira (Wichita State), 7-6(2), 6-2 advancing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region main draw, Thursday at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
Belassi was the lone CU student-athlete to win in the Round of 64, while seniors Monica Milewski and Franziska Jendrian fell in three sets, and junior Melisa Esposito lost in straight sets.
Earlier in the day, the doubles team of Belassi and Milewski received a first round bye in the Round of 64, then advanced in their lone match of the day with an 8-3 winner over Oklahoma's Marie-Pier Huet/Peta Maree Lancaster. Belassi/Milewski improved to 8-1 during the fall and will play in the Round of 16 on Friday.
The other CU doubles team of Esposito and Jendrian opened with an 8-5 winner over Laura Boguet and Natalia Salum of New Mexico State in the Round of 64, then subsequently fell in the Round of 32 to the seventh seeded team of Lutfiana Budiharto/Anna Egorova from Wichita State, 9-7. The setback for Esposito/Jendrian was their second in nine matches over the last two months.
The singles and doubles winners from the ITA Central Regional along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month at the University of Virginia, Nov. 6-9. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country, plus at-large selections, will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.
The Central Regional showcases players from Air Force, Arkansas, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Montana State, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, St. Louis, Tulsa, Utah, Utah State, Weber State, Wichita State and Wyoming.
