Belassi Falls at ITA; Advances in Doubles

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ? University of Colorado junior Camila Belassi started strong in her Round of 32 singles match, however dropped her next two sets to sixth seeded Ola Abou-Zerky of New Mexico, Friday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region main draw at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
Belassi won the first set 6-1, then dropped her next two 6-3, 6-0 falling to 8-2 during the fall season.
In doubles play, Belassi teamed with Monica Milewski for an 8-3 winner over Colorado State's Laura Neal and Tori Arneson in the Round of 16 doubles bracket. Belassi/Milewski, seeded third will face No. 12 seed Lauren Megale and Klaudia Wlodarczyk (Boise State) in Saturday's quarterfinal.
After receiving a first round bye in the Round of 64, the CU duo has now won nine of 10 matches.
The quarterfinal doubles match will take place Saturday morning and if CU advances to the semifinals, their match will also take place later in the day. Finals will be Sunday.
The singles and doubles winners from the ITA Central Regional along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month at the University of Virginia, Nov. 6-9. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country, plus at-large selections, will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.
The Central Regional showcases players from Air Force, Arkansas, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Montana State, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, St. Louis, Tulsa, Utah, Utah State, Weber State, Wichita State and Wyoming.
