Esposito & Jendrian to Meet in Consolation Finals
October 18, 2008 | Tennis
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ? The University of Colorado doubles team of Camila Belassi and Monica Milewski bid to advance to the Central Region main draw came to an end Saturday falling to Lauren Megale/Klaudia Wlodarczyk of Boise State, 8-5, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) quarterfinal.
Belassi and Milewski, seeded third, received a first round bye in the Round of 64 field, won a pair of matches before reaching the quarterfinal round.
In the consolation singles backdraw it will be an all-CU final with Melisa Esposito and Franziska Jendrian playing in Sunday's final round.
Esposito dropped her first round match on Thursday, then subsequently engineered four straight singles wins to make the consolation final. On Friday, she upended Anna Egorova of Wichita State, 6-4, 6-3, then defeated Dee Dee Nelson of Utah, 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 16.
On Saturday, Esposito won a pair of matches improving her fall record to 10-3. She defeated Tulsa's Anastasia Erofeeva, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarters, then defeated Utah's Andrea Maughn, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (1).
It was a different scenario for Jendrian, who has played seven singles matches since Wednesday. After playing a pair of qualifying matches on Wednesday to advance to the Round of 64 main draw, Jendrian stumbled with a first round main draw exit.
Now the senior from Rodleban, Germany has won four straight matches in the consolation bracket.
Jendrian defeated both Friday opponents in straight sets, Marta Marcinkowska of Tulsa, 6-2, 6-3, and Oklahoma's Marie Huet, 6-4, 6-2; and on Saturday defeated a pair of Wichita State players in the quarters and semifinals, respectively. Jendrian swept aside Torrie Browning (6-1, 7-5) and Florentina Hanisch (6-2, 6-2).
Jendrian's six victories over the last four days moves into a 13th place tie (Jessica Vanderdys [2002-06] and Renee Marshall [1989-93) on the school's all-time singles wins list with 72. During the 2008 fall season, Jendrian is 12-2.
Sunday morning, Esposito and Jendrian will play each other in the consolation final. In head-to-head battles, the CU teammates have only met once with Esposito defeating Jendrian, 6-1, 6-2 at last year's September CU Invitational.
The five-day ITA tennis event is hosted by the University of Utah. It showcases players from Air Force, Arkansas, Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Montana State, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, St. Louis, Tulsa, Utah, Utah State, Weber State, Wichita State and Wyoming.
