October 19, 2008 | Tennis
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ? University of Colorado junior Melisa Esposito capped off five consecutive victories to win the consolation singles bracket on Sunday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region.
The five-day event was hosted by the University of Utah.
Esposito lost her opening main draw singles match on Thursday, however, stormed back it the consolation back draw recording four of her final five wins in straights sets. On Sunday, she defeated fellow CU teammate Franziska Jendrian, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
It's only the second time Esposito and Jendrian have ever played one another in a fall tournament over the last three years. Last September, Esposito defeated Jendrian, 6-1, 6-2 at the CU Invitational.
Sunday was Esposito's 50th career singles victory at CU becoming only the 28th woman to win that many singles matches in a career.
Jendrian, who played twice in the qualifying round on Wednesday, also played a singles match every day ? including a pair of doubles matches on Thursday. After qualifying for the main draw with two victories, she lost her main draw singles match. Jendrian along with Esposito, won four straight in the consolation bracket.
Jendrian's six singles wins over the last five days moves her into a 13th place tie with Jessica Vanderdys [2002-06] and Renee Marshall [1989-93) on the school's all-time wins list with 72.
