Tennis Rebounds from 3-1 Deficit, Defeats Nebraska, 4-3

April 13, 2008 | Tennis

LINCOLN, Neb. ? For the first time this season, the University of Colorado tennis team performed a come-from-behind victory winning a match by a 4-3 margin, upsetting the No. 67 Nebraska Cornhuskers, Sunday afternoon at the NU Varsity Courts.

The victory was CU's second straight win in three days as well as their second win over the Cornhuskers in as many years. The Buffaloes improved to 9-10 overall and more impressively built their conference record to 6-3. Nebraska has lost four of its last five matches and fall to 15-5 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

CU won in Lincoln for the first time since the 2002 season.

Sunday's victory was the first time this season in seven matches CU won by a 4-3 margin and increased to their record to 7-3 when securing the doubles point.

Ninth-year head coach Nicole Kenneally also reached a personal milestone of her own, winning her 100th career match.

The doubles point proved to be the key ingredient the Buffaloes needed after finding themselves trailing 3-1 midway the singles competition. Doubles points were secured with Melisa Esposito and Franziska Jendrian, and Abbie Probert and Gleisy Torres Torres at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively.

Esposito/Jendrian won their 10th match of the year, while Probert/Torres Torres continued their team-best 13th triumph of the year and 11th of the spring.

Nebraska rallied in singles play taking the top three singles positions, all in straight sets for a 3-1 advantage.

The Buffs cut its margin in half when Jendrian won her team-high 20th singles victory defeating Maria Ring, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 6 slot. Jendrian also won her third straight and fifth of her last seven matches.  It was also her seventh conference victory in nine outings.

At No. 5, Esposito rallied from a set down storming back to defeat Amber Chandronnait, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. The sophomore from Palm Beach Garden, Fla., won her second straight match in three days after dropping her previous three conference matches.

With the team score knotted at three, CU relied on senior leadership for the decisive winning point behind Veera Nurmi. Nurmi also rallied from a set down defeating Stephanie Evans, 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-1. Nurmi won her seven conference match, in addition, recording her 71st career victory moving into a 13th place tie on the school's all-time list.

CU will conclude the conference regular season next Friday and Sunday against Oklahoma (April 18) and Oklahoma State (April 20).
