Tennis Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats OSU

April 20, 2008 | Tennis

STILLWATER, Okla. ? The University of Colorado tennis team performed a school-first, sweeping both Oklahoma schools on the same weekend, defeating Oklahoma State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the DuBois Tennis Center. The victory clinches CU the fourth seed at next week's Big 12 Tennis Championships at College Station, Texas with an 8-3 conference record.

With the fourth seed, the Buffs receive a first round bye and play the winner of No. 5 Kansas or 12 seed Iowa State in Friday's quarterfinals.  The No. 59th ranked Buffaloes also won their fourth straight match.

Sunday's win marked the first time in school history a Colorado team has defeated both Oklahoma schools on the road in the same year. On Friday, CU blanked Oklahoma, 7-0. It's only the fifth time a CU team performed that feat with the previous four times coming at home (2007, 2005, 1999, 1997).

On Sunday, CU (11-10, 8-3 Big 12) took two of three doubles matches for the point, then took five of six singles slots for the 6-1 victory.

In doubles, Camila Belassi and Monica Milewski secured the No. 1 slot with an 8-3 winner, and at No. 3, Abbie Probert and Gleisy Torres Torres clinched the point with an 8-2 winner for their fourth consecutive win. Probert/Torres Torres improved to 16-5 for the year and an impressive 13-4 as a pair at the No. 3 slot.

In singles play, the No. 61 ranked Cowgirls evened the team score at one taking the No. 2 position, then CU regained control taking the next four of five singles matches in three sets.

Melisa Esposito won her ninth match at the No. 5 slot and 18th of the year defeating Maryna Tkachenko, 6-4, 6-4. Torres Torres took care of business at No. 3 for her 73rd career victory edging Jo-Anne Karaitiana, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4; then Franziska Jendrian clinched her second match in three days, defeating Jessica Collins, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 for her team-high 22nd victory of the year.

Jendrian's 22 wins is a career-best and her pair of wins over the weekend give her 60 for her career.

With a 4-1 advantage, the Buffs added a pair of points as Veera Nurmi and Monica Milewski each added three-set victories. Nurmi also won her 73rd career match defeating Sasha Belova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4; and Milewski notched her 57th career tally with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 winner over Iryna Tkachenko at the No. 1 singles slot.

Nurmi's and Torres Torres' 73rd career win moved each of them in a tie for 10th on school's all-time victories list. In Big 12 play, Jendrian and Milewski each won their ninth dual match, with Torres Torres recording her eighth.
