Frank and Von Hagen Shine At Potts Invite
January 23, 2009 | Track and Field
BOULDER ? Freshman Alyssa Frank led the Buffaloes in her first ever pentathlon with a third place finish at the Potts Invite at Balch Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon.
“I am really excited,” Frank said. “This was the first time I competed in five events in one day.”
Frank recorded 3,155 points and was just 40 points out of second place as CSU's Jenna Sliwinski notched 3,195 points. Emily Pearson, a volunteer coach at CU, won the meet with 3,832 points.
Frank won the high jump part of the pentathlon with a personal record of 5 feet, 5.75 inches which was 1.25 inches higher than Pearson and her previous pr.
“That was really cool because Emily and I have been head to head all year [in practice],” Frank said. “She is the only person who jumps with me on my side and so to be able to compete with her was really exciting.”
Frank also took third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.57), fifth in the long jump (16-00.25) and sixth in the shot put (27-08.00) and the 800-meter run (2:38.58).
“Alyssa did a really great job of staying focused throughout the entire competition,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “She was very mature and is proving she is taking her Division I career very seriously.”
Freshman Brianne Beemer won the 800-meter run, the final event of the day, with a time of 2:19.20, which was over seven seconds faster than teammate Katie Dreher (2:27.00) who finished second.
“Bri ran a really good 800,” Malone said. “We were shooting for a time of 2:12, but she came through her first 400 with the time she was supposed to and really helped to lead the pack, which is important. She did a great job.”
Beemer took fourth overall with 3,128 points and Dreher was sixth (2,791).
For the second year in a row, sophomore Alex Von Hagen led the CU men on the first day of the heptathlon with 2,578 points. Last year Von Hagen had 2,729 after the first day of competition.
“It feels really good (to be in the lead),” Von Hagen said. “I started off kind of slow but I did well in the last two events. To be in the lead after day one is good and I feel comfortable where I am at.”
Von Hagen led the field with a pair of first place finishes in the long and high jumps. His long jump mark was 20-03.75, while his high jump was 6-05. His high jump mark was just a half inch shy of his personal record and is the third best jump by a CU heptathlete.
Von Hagen also took second in the shot put (33-02.50) and was fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.57).
The reigning Balch Fieldhouse record holder in the heptathlon looks to add on to his 2007 accomplishment of 4,784 points.
“I feel like my second day has gotten a little better, so I might be right at or a little bit above my score (from 2007), “ Von Hagen said.” If I could do a little better, that would be great.”
“I love that he loves competing at home and in front of his teammates,” Malone said. “He is a great high jumper and has had some issues with it but he is getting more and more good vibes and becoming more comfortable again.”
A CU athlete won each of the four events in the heptathlon that were contested on Friday. Besides Von Hagen's two wins, sophomore Adam Salzmann took top honors to start the day in the 60, clocking a time of 7.33. Freshman Todd Ipsen led all participants in the shot put with a throw of 34-04.25.
At the end of the first day, Brian Hopkin (University of Colorado-Colorado Springs) is in second place with 2,474 points and Salzmann is third (2,447). Ipsen is currently in fourth (2,409), Javen Correia is sixth (2,286), Eddie Taylor is seventh (2,225) and Jake Timmons is seventh (2,131). Carl Lum (UCCS) is in eighth place with 1,883 points.
In the men's pole vault competition, freshman James Nixon placed second by reaching 13-05.75.
The meet will resume on Saturday, Jan. 23 with the men's weight throw and the women's shot put at 10 a.m. The track events will begin at 1:45 p.m. with the men's 60-meter dash prelims.
