Golfers Slip To 13th at Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown
October 27, 2009 | Women's Golf
Boulder City, Nev. - The University of Colorado women's golf team battled through heavy wind conditions here Tuesday in the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown and is tie for 13th place with one round left to play.
The top-ranked team in the field, No. 17 Arizona, jumped into the team lead after carding the second-lowest round of the day. U of A owns a 284-294-578 score card and is followed by Washington (579), UC Davis (582), Florida (586), and Louisville (587) to round out the top-five.
"The wind certainly picked up and affected our round on the back nine," said head coach Anne Kelly. "I thought we played the front okay even with the wind starting on the second or third hole, but we lost focus and concentration on a few key holes on the back nine and that cost us. The wind was blowing over 25 mph most of the day and it definitely made it tough."
Senior Christine Kim stayed tough for the Buffs in round two, carding a 3-over 75 for the team's lowest round of the day. Kim, after bogeying her second hole, played the next 11 holes at 1-under before running into an unfortunate bump on a par-4 on the back nine. Kim tripled the 14th hole and made par on the remaining four holes to finish 3-over, and hold onto a spot in the top-10.
"Christine is playing very solid and striking the ball well," added Kelly. "Overall for the most part she has made very good decisions. The way she practices has improved a lot and it's paying off."
Sophomore Emily Talley dropped into a tie for 48th place individually after tough second round. Talley carded a trio of double-bogeys on the back nine and finished with a 9-over 81 on day two.
Senior Dominique Pytlewski follows Talley by three strokes and owns a two-round total of 155 for 66th place individually.
Fellow senior Julie Kim and junior Stephanie Simich each carded an 82 (10-over) in the second round and are tied for 71st and 79th, respectively.
In the individual standings, Louisville's Sara-Maude Juneau has jumped into the lead after a tournament-low 5-under 67 in round two. She shares the lead with Sherlyn Popelka of Arizona as the pair lay claim to 138 two-round totals.
The third and final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown will tee off at 9 a.m. MST on Wednesday, Oct. 28 and live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
