Denver-Colorado Postgame Notes

Colorado wins its third straight, its best string since winning five in a row to close out the nonconference portion of the 2008-09 season.

The Buffaloes improve to 5-1 for the first time since 2003-04.

Head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller is now 1-0 vs. Denver.  CU is now 4-1 overall against Denver this was the first meeting between the two teams since November 19, 1999 when the Pioneers beat the Buffs 71-67.

Former Colorado All-American and CU Athletic Hall of Famer Shelley Sheetz was welcomed back to Boulder tonight.  Sheetz is in her second year as an assistant coach for Denver.  Sheetz is still Colorado's all-time leader in 3-point field goals, ranks second in assists, and she is fourth all-time in scoring

Basketball Programs Thriving - With Colorado's women at 5-1, and the men at 5-2, the Buffs' two basketball programs are enjoying their best combined start (10-3) since 2003-04 when the women started 5-1 and the men 6-1 (11-2)

Colorado closed out the first half with a 7-2 run in the final 3:05 highlighted by a Bianca Smith buzzer beating three to take a  38-28 lead into the half. Colorado's largest lead off the game was 29 points with 3:17 left to play in the game.

Colorado has had at least three double-digit scorers in all six games to open the season.  Tonight was the first game this season  where Colorado had four players score in double digits (Brittany Spears 17, Bianca Smith 13, Courtney Dunn 16, Chucky Jeffery 12).   The last time this happened for the Buffs was February 18, 2009 (Kara Richards, Spears, Smith, and Kelly Jo Mullaney) in a CU 69-62 victory of Kansas

Colorado's 84 points were its most since scoring 93 in a 93-63 win over Colorado State on Nov. 19, 2008.

Getting 'Er Dunn - Senior center Courtney Dunn had a career night, logging personal bests with 16 points, 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. Her 16 points equaled her total for the first five games of the season combined. Her previous career high was nine against Kansas (1/22/08), a mark she eclipsed in the first half alone (14).

Spears Climbs Ladders - Junior Brittany Spears moved from 19th to 17th on CU's all-time scoring charts, finishing the evening with 17 points. Spears now has 1,114 points as she passes DeCelle Thomas (1,098 from 1992-96) and Julie Hoehing (1,107 from 1980-84). She also had five rebounds to move from 17th to 16th on CU's all-time list. Spears now has 543 career rebounds, passing Mindy Henry (542 from 1989-93).

Spears has scored in double digits the first six games to begin this season.  She has had 10 consecutive games with 10 or more points dating back to February 28, 2009 vs Missouri.  Tonight was her 60th career game with double digits.
