No. 39 Tennis Upset at Oregon, 4-3

February 08, 2009 | Tennis

EUGENE, Ore. ? The University of Colorado tennis team started strong securing the doubles point, however the host No. 58 Oregon Ducks rallied with four singles wins in six matches to upset the No. 39 Buffaloes, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center on the campus of Oregon University.

Oregon upset a pair of nationally ranked opponents over the weekend, also defeating No. 59 New Mexico, 5-2 improving to 5-2 on the season. CU drops to 4-3 with all three losses coming to ranked opponents (Oregon, Stanford, LSU).

“It was a great weekend of tennis, unfortunately, we came up short against a solid Oregon team,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said.  “I'm seeing a lot of progress from the team and now we'll focus our attention of returning home this coming weekend against Boise State on Saturday.”

Oregon has now won four straight over CU since 2004, while Buffaloes hold an 8-4 edge in the head-to-head series.

The early portion of the competition started off on the right foot for the CU women as senior Franziska Jendrian teamed up with freshman teammate Ania Anuszkiewicz for an 8-5 winner at the No. 2 doubles slot. The victory for Jendrian pulls her into a first place tie with Jessica Garrow (1997-2000) at the top of the school's all-time doubles list with 69 career victories. Ironically, Garrow is standing in sixth place on the singles list with 81 wins, three ahead of Jendrian, who stands in seventh place with 78.

CU clinched the doubles point at No. 3 as sophomore Abbie Probert and freshman Michala Hedelund Jensen edged Madelie Janse van Rensburg and Trudie du Toit, 9-7. The Buffs jumped out to a 4-1 and 7-5 lead, only to see the OU freshmen pair even it up both times. Despite a number of match points, the host answered, only to see CU finally take advantage and win the match on an unforced error clinching the doubles point for the for the fourth time this season.

In singles, CU junior Melisa Esposito broke a three-match skid winning her match at No. 2 defeating Ana Cecilia Olivos 6-1, 6-2 for her 15th win of the year. Probert then increased the team lead to 3-0, defeating Madelie Janse van Rensburg 6-2, 6-3. Probert won for the third straight time for her eighth singles win of the year.

Oregon then rallied to win the match with a straight set winner at No. 3 and No. 6, a three-set winner at No. 1, and the deciding match at No. 5, where Stephanie Macfarlane rallied from  a set down to defeat Ania Anuszkiewicz 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.

CU will host No. 38 Boise State this Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House. Doubles begins at 10 a.m., followed by singles. Admission and parking are free.
