Coburn and Hanenburg Earn Regional Marks

April 16, 2009 | Track and Field

WALNUT/AZUSA, Calif. ? University of Colorado freshmen Emma Coburn and Emily Hanenburg raced their way into the CU record book, becoming the fifth and eighth fastest women to run the 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively.

Both ran in just their second collegiate steeplechase competition at the prestigious Mt. Sac Relays on Thursday night. Coburn finished in 10 minutes, 16.54 seconds while Hanenburg ran a time of 10:49.54. Both had recorded regional marks earlier this season, but these times will move them further up the list. Coburn's time currently ranks 12th in the country and is sixth in the Midwest region.

Coburn ran in the invitational section of the steeplechase and placed 14th overall, improving on her personal record by 33.8 seconds. Lindsay Anderson, who runs for Nike and represented the U.S. at the Olympics, finished first in 9:46.56. Eight professionals or unattached athletes finished above Coburn; she was the fifth collegiate athlete to cross the finish.

Hanenburg had an equally impressive performance in the open division section as she shaved over 16 seconds off her PR. She was 14th in the race. Hanenburg first ran the event last Saturday at the CU Invite and finished in 11:06.28.

Dan Edwards missed a regional time in the men's steeplechase. He ran a PR of 9:23.81 and placed 14th overall in the open division section.

At the combined events portion of the meet the Buffs also had a successful showing. Despite not recording a mark in the pole vault, Alex Von Hagen came away with 5,742 points. He took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.92), third in the discus (98-6), fifth in the javelin (144-4) and was second in the 1,500-meter run with a personal record of 4:38.28.

Eddie Taylor scored 5,421 points. He ran the eighth fastest time in the 1,500-meter run by a combined events athlete in CU history by recording a personal record of 4:34.18 to lead the field. Taylor was also sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.08), ninth in the discus (81-7), tied for sixth in the pole vault (11-5 ?) and 11th in the javelin (94-6).

The women also had a good day. Alyssa Frank notched 4,169 points while Katie Dreher recorded 3,631. Frank was fifth in the long jump (16-10), 10th in the javelin (86-10) and 12th in the 800 with a personal best of 2:34.28. Dreher did not record a mark in the javelin, but was 10th in the long jump (15-10) and third in the 800 (2:23.32).
