Buffs Prep For Midwest Region Championship
May 27, 2009 | Track and Field
BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field team is sending 10 athletes to compete Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, at the NCAA Midwest Region Championships in Norman, Okla.
The CU men are sending six individuals while the women are sending four to the meet at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex.
Brandin Williams will kick off the competition for the Buffs in the javelin throw on Friday at 2:30 p.m. (CST). The Big 12 javelin champion ranks fifth in the region with his toss of 222 feet, one inch, which he recorded in his final throw of the championship. Williams became CU's first conference javelin champion in 47 years.
Kaity Kark will be competing in her first ever regional meet in the discus at 5:30 p.m. Friday. She ranks 26th in the region after launching a PR of 155-06 in the Big 12 meet two weeks ago. Kark is the first CU female thrower to compete at regionals in the discus and is just the third thrower in the brief seven-year history of the meet.
Matt Tebo and Andy Wacker will be racing in the men's 5,000-meter run at 9 p.m. to close out the first day of competition for the Buffs. Tebo ranks seventh on the regional list with a time of 13 minutes, 56.39 seconds while Wacker is 15th (14:06.39). This is Wacker's first trip to the meet while Tebo will be making his second straight appearance in the event.
The Buffs will start out Saturday at 11 a.m. in the hammer throw with a pair of competitors. Patrick Bachmann and Chase Dukes are making their regional debut. Bachmann enters the meet ranked 16th in the region with PR of 189-03, which he recorded at the conference meet while placing seventh. Dukes is 19th overall. His mark of 188-05 was recorded at the Mt. SAC Relays in April and is also a PR.
Jenny Barringer will compete in her fourth straight regional meet in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and will be joined by a pair of teammates, Emma Coburn and Emily Hanenburg. Barringer owns the top time in the region at 9:49.93 after the altitude conversion. She made her season debut in the event at the Big 12 meet as it was her first steeplechase race since the finals at the Beijing Olympics.
Barringer is the meet record holder in the steeplechase with a mark of 9:44.31 and has won the previous three regional titles. A CU woman has won the event every year but one (2004) since the regional format was incepted in 2003.
Coburn is the fifth ranked racer in the steeplechase. Her time of 10:06.54, which she set at the Mt. SAC Relays, is the U.S. Junior record. Hanenburg ranks 18th with an altitude adjusted time of 10:43.95, set at the Big 12 meet. The women's steeplechase is at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Christian Thompson is set for his second consecutive trip to regionals. He ranks fourth overall with a time of 8:49.38, a personal best. Thompson will look to better his finish last year (13th) when he ran the final lap or so with just one shoe. His race is set for 7:40 p.m. on Saturday and will be the final event for the Buffs.
In the field of qualifiers from the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming, the top five finishers in each individual event this weekend and the top three relay teams in each race, will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships. In addition, a national "at-large field' will be created from the sixth through eighth place individual finishers and fourth through sixth relay teams, based on a year long descending order list to fill the NCAA Championship fields in each event area.
