Tebo Places Sixth At Regionals

NORMAN, Okla. ? University of Colorado sophomore Matt Tebo is one step closer to advancing to nationals after finishing sixth overall in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Midwest Region Championship at the John Jacob Track & Field Complex on Friday.
Tebo finished the 5k race in 14 minutes, 6.31 seconds and was just 4.06 seconds behind the winner, Minnesota's Hassan Mead, who finished in 14:02.25. It was a very close race as the top eight all finished within 5.5 seconds of each other. The top five in the race automatically advance to nationals, but Tebo has a good of advancing on the descending order list with his season-best time of 13:56.39.
“Matt Tebo finished one spot out off automatically qualifying,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “The Air Force guy (Sean Houseworth) that finished ahead of him has also qualified in the 10k and there is a chance that he would just run the 10, which could move Matt up to fifth in the region. Otherwise he is 24th on the NCAA list, so one way or another he has a good shot at advancing to nationals.”
Redshirt freshman Andy Wacker placed 19th overall in the 5k. He finished in 14:43.19.
Junior Brandin Williams placed 12th overall in the javelin throw to keep his hopes of advancing to nationals alive. His best throw of the day was 201 feet, 2 inches, which he recorded on his second toss. Williams won the Big 12 title two weeks ago with a personal best throw of 222-01. He does rank fifth in the region so there is a chance that he will still be able to qualify for nationals on the descending order list since he finished in the top 12. He beat out Air Force's Conner VanFossen by just one inch to stay in the top 12.
“Brandin didn't have a great day; he was about five meters off what he threw at Big 12s, but he was in the top 12, by one inch, so he can live on the (descending order) list which look good for him to get in to NCAAs,” Wetmore said. “We think he has a good chance based on our math.”
Junior Kaity Kark made her first appearance at the regional meet in the discus throw. She placed 27th overall. Kark's first throw was 124-01 and she fouled on her final two attempts. Kark advanced to the meet after recording a PR of 155-06 at the Big 12 meet.
Patrick Bachmann and Chase Dukes will kick off the competition on Saturday for CU at 11 a.m. (CST). Jenny Barringer, Emma Coburn and Emily Hanenburg will race in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 7:15 p.m. (CST) and Christian Thompson will race in the men's steeplechase at 7:40.
