Golfers 10th After Day One Of CSU Ram Fall Classic
September 14, 2009 | Women's Golf
Fort Collins - The University of Colorado women's golf team is currently in 10th place after two rounds here Monday in the CSU Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, its first tournament competition of the 2009-10 season.
Idaho (291-277-568) leads the team standings thanks to an impressive 11-under second round. Host Colorado State is two strokes back (281-289-570), and Texas Tech (287-285-572), New Mexico (286-292-578), and Louisville (287-292-579) round out the top-five. Colorado shaved off 11 strokes in round two and carded a team score of 589 (+13) on the 6,259 yard, par 72 Ptarmigan Country Club Course.
"We had it going this afternoon for awhile, but we didn't finish the greatest," said head coach Anne Kelly. "It's been a slow start for us so far, but we made a lot of birdies today which was a good sign. We just need to pay attention to the little details and lower our mistakes."
Sophomore Emily Talley led the Buffaloes on day one after rebounding from a 3-over par 75 in the morning with a 3-under 69 in the afternoon. Talley showed consistent improvement in round two and played 13 holes to par with four birdies and just one bogey. Talley's 69 in round two was the first sub-70 round of her career. Talley (75-69-144), who was 38th after round one, moved up 22 spots in the standings and finished the day tied for 16th place overall.
"This morning I definitely had an assortment of scores," said Talley. "On the second 18 I was much more consistent and could feel that I was playing safer shots and I was able to make a few birdies.
"We're always working on trying to finish strong. That's always in the back of my mind when I have four holes left. Last week was an eye-opener, and same with this morning, and I just felt like I needed to get back in the swing of things and stay focused."
Seniors Christine Kim and Dominique Pytlewski followed Talley and are tied for 34th place individually. Pytlewski (73-75-148) carded CU's low round in the morning and tallied seven birdies on the day. Kim, who notched a six-stroke improvement, was as low as 3-under in round two, before an unfortunate double-bogey towards the end of her round. Kim was also just one of three golfers in the 89-player field to record an eagle on day one.
"For (Emily) Talley, breaking 70 was a great accomplishment and Christine (Kim) was about 4-under for awhile and on that same pace," added Kelly. "The under-par rounds are a good sign. We're almost there, we just have to smooth out the rough edges, give ourselves higher percentages to make pars and eliminate the bogeys and bigger numbers."
Senior Julie Kim (76-74-150) and redshirt freshman Taylor Doyle (76-77-153) rounded out the scoring for the Buffs and they are tied for 45th and 57th place, respectively.
CU's Jamie Befort also competed in the event as an individual and she carded a two-round total of 165, good for 84th individually.
The third and final round of the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic will get underway Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Fans who wish to follow the action can visit www.golfstat.com.
