Golfers Take Ninth At CSU Ram Fall Classic
September 15, 2009 | Women's Golf
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The University of Colorado women's golf team recorded a pair of sub-par rounds on Tuesday and moved up one spot in the team standings, as the Buffaloes took a ninth place finish in the CSU Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic.
Idaho's second round, 11-under par score helped them hang on for the team title over host Colorado State by just four strokes. Idaho has an 859 score, or 5-under par, followed by Colorado State (863), Louisville (867), New Mexico (867), and Texas Tech (870). Colorado finished ninth with an 883 total.
"I am proud of the overall finish, considering we got off to a pretty rough start this morning," said head coach Anne Kelly. "I see signs of better play and performances but we still have some work to do and we just need to continue to play better than we have been."
Sophomore Emily Talley led the Buffaloes here, recording a 2-over par 74 Tuesday for a 218 total, tying her for 17th in the individual standings. Talley, who carded her first career sub-70 round yesterday, still managed to play 12 of her 18 holes to par, including three birdies, but a pair of double-bogeys kept her from dipping under par and making a significant move in the standings.
Senior Dominique Pytlewski finished one stroke behind Talley after carding her first sub-par round of the season, a 1-under 71 in round three. Pytlewski was three over through her first 11 holes, but she immediately turned things around and carded four birdies in a five-hole span to finish strong and dip under par. Pytlewski, who started the day in 34th place individually, moved up 15 spots in the standings and finished in a tie for 19th overall.
"I started out early with a double and it seemed like it was going to be a really rough day," said Pytlewski. "I wasn't hitting too well but I had to hang in there and try to be more solid and stick to my swing adjustments. There was that stretch of holes where I birdied the last two rounds and made good putts so I was able to keep my momentum going. I knew I needed to finish strong since I had to end on the hardest hole on the entire course, but I actually almost birdied it so it was definitely a sigh of relief once my last shot hit the green."
Arguably Colorado's most impressive turnaround and performance was that of redshirt freshman Taylor Doyle. Doyle, who is playing in her first ever tournament as a Buff, recorded a 2-under 70 in the final round and her 223 total and seven-stroke improvement moved her from 57th to 35th individually. Doyle tallied a team-high five birdies in her final round and remained even or under par throughout her entire round, pacing her to a career-best 70.
"I have been really nervous (coming into my first real tournament)," said Doyle. "I didn't get any experience last year, but I worked a lot in tournaments this summer and I felt ready and a lot less nervous. I think that I've adjusted well; so far so good.
"I was a lot more comfortable with what shots I was hitting this round. In my first two rounds things weren't working together and I would hit a great shot but miss the putt, and today I hit both the great shots and great putts. It wasn't that anything changed, but instead everything was just working."
"I am happy with the way Taylor and Domi brought it back, and extremely proud and pleased with Taylor's performance today," added Kelly. "We just need better play from all five players at the same time."
Seniors Christine Kim (77-71-79-227) and Julie Kim (76-74-81-231) wrapped up the tournament with 54th and 61st place finishes, respectively.
CU's Jamie Befort also competed in the event as an individual and she carded a three-round total of 241, good for 80th individually.
Colorado will now have just a few days to prepare before traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the UNM Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19-20. For those who wish to follow the live scoring throughout the tournament, visit www.golfstat.com.
