Christine Kim Posts Best Third Round; Buffs Finish 14th
February 10, 2010 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Senior Christine Kim had the best day of any golfer in the final round of a star-studded field at the Northrop Grumann Regional Challenge. She enable the University of Colorado women's golf team to post its best score in the final round with a 309, but it wasn't enough to propel the Buffs out of 14th place, where they finished with a three round total of 933.
Christine Kim shot an even par round of 71 and finished with a three-day total of 226, tied for 21st place individually. Starting on the 16th hole, she birdied two of her first three holes and had four total birdies on the round. She was again impressive on the first nine holes of the course, shooting 1-over for the third straight day. But unlike Tuesday when she bogeyed the last three holes, she rounded out her tournament with pars on the two hardest holes on the course and then finished with a birdie on the last hole to earn the distinction of being the only player in the third round that didn't shoot above par.
"I just hit really well and I got off to a good start," Christine Kim said. "I had two birdies in the first three holes, and I kept on making up and downs so that's it. The course wasn't too bad and the moisture didn't affect me."
The weather had affected the course for most of the tournament, but Wednesday turned out to be a beautiful day with clear skies. The course still played long because the fairways were saturated from Tuesday.
"Today's forecast was definitely wrong," CU coach Anne Kelly said. "It was a beautiful day. The people running the tournament did a great job on the course. This is one of the best tournament's we've been to, from how we were treated to how the event was run. Everybody was fantastic."
Redshirt freshman Taylor Doyle concluded a strong tournament by shooting a 7-over 78 to finish with a three day total of 14-over par 227, which tied her for 26th place. With four holes remaining, she was at 2-over par and was just two shots out of a top 10 finish before finishing at 5-over on her last four holes.
"Taylor was going so strong and had a rough finish to her round," Kelly said. "But I'm proud of her for her performance with such a tough field. I hope she can take some confidence from this and learn and next time she's in this position she'll finish a lot stronger."
Senior Julie Kim finished her day with an 8-over par 79 to finish tied for 72nd with a score of 241. Sophomore Emily Talley closed out her tournament with a 13-over par 84 and a three round score of 242, good for 74th place. Senior Dominique Pytlewski finished 10-over par 81 and three day total of 255 for 79th place.
"As for the rest of the team," Kelly said. "We can take away a lot of experience and learn what we need to work on for the next tournament. We'll be looking forward to playing again."
The Buffaloes will have a month off before their second tournament of the spring when they'll head back to California to play in the Julie Inkster Spartan Invitational in San Jose March 8-9.
