Netters Sweep New Mexico, 7-0
February 14, 2010 | Tennis
"Traditionally, New Mexico (1-4) is a solid tennis team and they always play a tough match," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "It was a great win by our team today."
CU started the day sweeping the doubles competition and a 1-0 lead. It's the fourth time this season the Buffs secured the doubles point and an early lead.
In singles, freshman Erin Sanders made it 2-0 as her opponent Anya Villanueva suffered an injury before the match began resulting in a forfeit. CU would go on to win the next five singles matches all in straight sets for their second straight win over the Lobos in as many years.
Monica Milewski, Melisa Esposito, Camila Belassi, Abbie Probert, and Michala Hedelund Jensen all took straight set winners.
Milewski, the No. 90th ranked player, became only the eighth women in school history to win 80 career singles matches blanking Ashley Bonner, 6-0, 6-0 at the top singles spot. It was also her 15th win of the year.
Probert clinched the team win at No. 4, also sweeping Michaela Oldani, 6-0, 6-0. It was Probert's third career clinching team victory. Esposito, ranked No. 64 nationally, defeated Laura Richardson, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 for her fourth win in five outings and her 73rd career match. The win moves Esposito into a 15th place tie on the school's all-time wins list.
Belassi became the next CU player to secure a point edging Kristin Eggleston, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 3 slot for her fifth straight win; and Hedelund Jensen rounded out the shutout, defeating Amy Shipperd, 6-0, 6-3 for her second win in as many days.
In doubles play, Belassi/Esposito defeated Bonner/Villanueva by forfeit due to injury for their team best 11th tandem win; and Milewski and teammate Ania Anuszkiewicz defeated Eggleston/Richardson, 8-3 at No. 2. The win helps Milewski achieve her 71st career doubles triumph. Her four wins over the last two days gives her 151 victories (80 singles and 71 doubles) moving her into third place on the school's combined victories list passing Jessica Garrow (150 wins) from 1996-2000.
At No. 3, CU's Hedelund Jensen/Probert edged Oldani/Shipperd, 8-6 for their second win together this spring season.
The Buffaloes return home to take on in-state rival Denver, Saturday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. First serve begins with the three doubles competition at the Millennium Harvest House.
