Coburn Places Sixth In the Mile
February 27, 2010 | Track and Field
AMES, Iowa - Sophomore Emma Coburn shaved 4.17 seconds off her personal record in the mile to lead the University of Colorado track and field team at 2010 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center on the campus of Iowa State.
Coburn raced to a sixth-place finish in 4:43.87, improving from her PR of 4:48.05 that she clocked the previous night in the prelims. With the finish, she became the ninth fastest performer in the event at CU and ran the 14th best time ever by a Buff.
"I didn't really know what to expect for the finals," Coburn said. "They went out hard and stayed hard and there was a pack of seven of us that went all out. I think the distance between me and the top girl was about a second. I was really running as fast as I could to get the four second PR. I was really hoping to score a point or two more, but with the PR I am very happy with this performance."
The front seven ran a very tight race for the majority of the way. In the final 300 meters, Coburn didn't let down and was able to pass Texas' Betzy Jimenex just before the line to move from seventh to sixth. This is the second event the sophomore scored in for the Buffs as she ran the mile leg of the distance medley relay that took fifth on Friday night.
"I didn't think I was going to have to run a 4:43 to score points for the team," Coburn said. "I thought maybe I would go 4:46 or so. I was a little surprised that I had to run that fast. This was my third race in two days and so I was really surprised how fast I had to and did run. It was fun."
CU head coach Mark Wetmore was happy with Coburn's performance for her third mile run in two days.
"Emma had a very nice race in the mile with a very big personal best by five seconds which almost never happens in a conference meet," he said.
The CU men failed to score any points for the Buffs in the heptathlon, but recorded some great performances in the 1,000-meter run, the final event of the multi. Adam Salzmann blazed to a 2:36.03 finish to lead the strong field en route to a personal best which doubles as the CU record in the heptathlon. Alex Von Hagen was fourth (2:38.62) with the second best time in CU history and Eddie Taylor was sixth overall (2:40.24). Taylor was not outdone as his mark was also a PR and a ranks No. 3 on the all-time heptathlon list.
"It's quite a feat to win any event in this competition," Malone said. "The top seven [total] scores qualified for nationals. This is basically a preview of the NCAA meet; so to come in and compete at this level is the equivalent of competing at a national meet. We train as a team and we train to win the 1000 and 800 in the Big 12. And a plus of that is that all guys recorded personal bests; just like yesterday in the women's pentathlon."
Overall, Von Hagen led the Buffs with a ninth-place finish after recording a PR of 5,082 points. It ranks third overall in the CU record book. Taylor was 10th with 4,766 and Salzmann was 13th (4,517).
The distance events did not contribute any points to the team score on Saturday. The highest finisher for the Buffs was ninth in the 3k. Laura Thweatt came back from a seventh-place finish in the 5k on Friday night and was just .68 out of eighth place in the 3k with a mark of 9:35.00. Aldo Vega led the men for the second straight night. He also took ninth in the 3k with a time of 8:15.35. Vega was eighth in the 5k on Friday.
As a team, the Buffs finished 12th in the men's and women's team scores. The women recorded 11 total points, while the men had one point. Texas A&M won the women's title with 130.5 points and Oklahoma took the men's title (114).
"The team scores are nothing to feel good about," Wetmore said. "I need to sit down with my staff and see what we are doing wrong, and sit down with the male distance runners and say; 'Do we know what we are doing here?' and try to pull some things together by the outdoor meet in May.
"This is the lowest combined score on both sides. It's nothing for us to feel good about and definitely something for us to think about."
