Women's Golf Sits In 13th After First Day of Northrop Grumann
February 08, 2010 | Women's Golf
PALOS VERDES, Calif. - The University of Colorado women's golf team got its spring season underway here at the Northrop Grumann Regional Challenge by firing a 27-over par 311 to sit in 13th place with 18 of the 54 holes now complete on the 5,912 yard, par-71 course here at the Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Sophomore Taylor Doyle led the way for the Buffaloes, firing a 3-over par 74 and currently sits tied for 21st individually. She had a pair of birdies and five bogies to go along with 11 birdies. With the back-nine being played first, she was the only Buff who didn't struggle the first half of their respective rounds.
"We didn't play particularly well," CU coach Anne Kelly said. "But Taylor played really well. She's a talented player and has been working hard and it's definitely paying off for her."
Kelly described the course as a tour-quality course. "The greens are challenging, small and quick with a lot of bunkers. It's a different tempo than what we've been playing on and it took a little bit to adjust, but I thought Emily (Talley) and Christine (Kim) both adjusted well the second half of their respective days to on a high note."
Sophomore Emily Talley finished the day with a 6-over par 77 and currently sits tied for 39th. After starting her round with a bogey, she rebounded to pull even after the third hole. Unfortunately, she played the next three holes at 4-over, a stretch that proved to be the toughest for the entire field. But she rebounded played the final 12 holes at 2-over with 10 pars for her final score.
The 401-yard, par 4, 13th hole and the 399-yard, par 4, 14th hole both played as the toughest of the day for the entire field. The 13th played to a +.78 average while the 14th played at +.70, with the next hardest hole being the 2nd hole, which played at +.48 on the day. It proved to be that way for the Buffs, as well, as those two holes played at 12-over par for the Buffs while on the other 16 holes, the Buffs shot 29-over par.
Senior Christine Kim also improved dramatically the last half of the day and played the final nine holes at 1-over par. She struggled on the first half of the day with six bogeys, but rebounded with a birdie to go along with two bogeys in the last nine holes.
"Emily and Christine definitely came back a little," Kelly said. "They just needed to get their tempo and get a feel for these greens. Hopefully they have it now and can continue it tomorrow."
Seniors Julie Kim and Dominique Pytlewski both struggled with an 11-over par 82 and 14-over par 85, respectively. Julie Kim's day was likely best summed up in the final five holes, in which she sandwiched two birdies inside double bogeys. Pytlewski has been fighting off a cold and although she looked good in the practice round Sunday and got off to the best start for the Buffs, she struggled the rest of the way.
"We need our seniors tomorrow," Kelly said. "That definitely hurt us today. Hopefully they can get their tempo and get a grasp on these greens tomorrow."
Due to incoming weather, the second round will begin at 8:30 a.m. local time with a shot gun start.
