Doyle Moves Into Top 20; Buffs Fall To 14th

February 09, 2010 | Women's Golf

PALOS VERDES, Calif. - University of Colorado redshirt freshman Taylor Doyle improved one spot into the top 20 while the women's golf team dropped one spot to 14th at the Northrop Grumann Regional Challenge. After scoring a 29-over par 313 Tuesday, 36 of the 54 holes are now complete on the 5,912 yard, par 71 course here at the Palos Verdes Golf Club and the Buffs have a two-day total of 624.

Doyle shot a 4-over par 75, giving her a two-day total of 149, or 7-over par, and moved into a tie for 20th place.  She continued her consistent play with 12 pars, five pars and a birdie in the round.  She also saved par on her final hole with a long put in the pouring rain.

"Taylor had a good day, especially with the tough conditions," CU coach Anne Kelly said.  "This is only her fifth competitive tournament in collegiate golf, and she's doing this well with such a high level of competition with the players that are here."

Doyle's score matches that of two of the top 10-ranked players in the country according to GolfStat.com, No. 4 Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville and No. 6 Sydnee Michaels of UCLA, and is ahead of two other top 10 players as five of the nation's top 10 ranked players are in this tournament, which also features five of the nation's top 11 teams according to the GolfStat.com rankings.

"I've really been concentrating on taking things one shot at a time," Doyle said.  "In the past, sometimes I get ahead of myself, so I've been trying to slow down and if I have a bad shot, I'm trying not to get too upset.  I haven't been hitting a lot of greens the last few days, but I've been able to get up and down and I think that's because I've been taking my time and not freaking out if I have one bad shot."

The weather continues to play a role for the entire field.  Tuesday's round was changed to a shotgun start to try and beat the weather, and that worked for the first 12 or 13 holes before the rain hit.  There was about an hour delay before the last few holes were finished and the rain came back before most golfers were able to finish.

"It's a tough course, period," Kelly said.  "The holes that played the hardest yesterday ended up being our finishing holes, so that made it extra difficult because we played those holes in the rain."

"It was hard because everybody was so tired," Doyle added. "Most of the people I talked to were more worried about finishing than their scores, so that hour break really kind of messed with everybody's minds."

Senior Christine Kim shot a 6-over par 77 on the day, improving one shot on her first round score.  She started her day on the 16th hole and had a double bogey, but she rebounded and was again impressive on the first nine holes of the course, shooting 1-over for the second straight round.  After a birdie on the 11th hole to put her at 3-over par on the round, she finished her day with three straight bogeys to finish 6-over after the weather moved in.

Sophomore Emily Talley finished her day with a 10-over par score of 81 while senior Julie Kim finished with a 9-over par 80 and senior Dominique Pytlewski scored an 18-over score of 89.

"Once again, we just need some help from our seniors, Julie and Domi," Kelly said. "They're struggling.  But we are planning and preparing to play and do our best tomorrow and we'll see what happens."

The forecast for the area is calling for rain most of the night, letting up in the morning by about 8 a.m.  The rest of Wednesday's forecast looks good, however the course is already so saturated that it will make for more difficult playing conditions.
