Buffs In Sixth At Big 12 Championships

April 24, 2010 | Women's Golf

NORMAN, Okla. -- Sophomore Emily Talley remains in the top five and junior Stephanie Simich led CU with a 1-over par 73 as the University of Colorado women's golf team fell to sixth place Saturday through two rounds of the 2010 Big 12 Championships here at the Jimmy Austin OU Golf Course.

With tough playing conditions and tricky hole locations, No. 26 Oklahoma State slightly widened its lead from Friday and now leads by 10 strokes over the rest of the competition.  The Cowgirls have a two round total of 13-over par 589 while Texas moved from a tie with the Buffs in fourth to second with a 36-hole score of 599.  Kansas and No. 25 Texas A&M are tied for third just one stroke back (600).  Iowa State is fifth with a 36-hole score of 605 and the Buffs are just one stroke behind the Cyclones at 30-over par 606 after shooting a 16-over par 304 Saturday.

"The conditions were tough today and I'm proud of the team," CU coach Anne Kelly said.  "It was windy and cool, the wind was about 25 miles per hour and gusty all day long.  We fought really hard.  The difference between us in sixth and second place is just a couple of five- or six-foot putts per person."

Talley remained tied for fourth after shooting a 3-over par 75 and sits at 3-over par for the championship.  Talley's 36-hole total of 147 is the best in CU history at the Big 12 Championships, besting Erin Kerr (2001) and Maria Persson-Gulda (2006), who both had 36-hole scores of 5-over par 149.   She had 15 pars in the second round and her 31 pars are four more than any other player in the field.

"It was frustrating for me today because I didn't make a single birdie," Talley said.  "I did hit almost every fairway, most greens and had some good ups and downs.  But having a not-so-good day and still maintaining fourth makes me feel good about tomorrow.  Hopefully I can make some putts and have a solid third round."

Simich's second-round 73 is tied for the fifth-best round at the Big 12 Championships in CU history and when compiled with Talley's even par round of 72 on Friday, this is the second time CU has had two rounds of 73 or better in one Big 12 Championship.  The first time was in 2006 when Lindsay Caljouw shot a 73 and Persson-Gulda carded a 71 in the second round.   Simich shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine before the wind picked up.

"I got off to a really good start," Simich said.  "I stayed cool and collected and fired at the center of the green on a lot of holes.  I wasn't hunting for pins.  I made a few mistakes on the back nine after the wind picks up.  When the wind kicks up at Big 12's, you just fire for the middle of the green and take a 30-footer."

Senior Christine Kim shot a 5-over par 77 and is tied for 24th along with Simich and freshman Taylor Doyle, who shot a 7-over par 79 in the second round.  All three are 9-over par through 36 holes.  Kim was 5-over on the front nine and went against the grain on the back nine with the increased weather by shooting an even par with one birdie and one bogey.   Senior Dominique Pytlewski is tied for 48th individually with a two-round total of 160, or 16 over par.

"Today was a difficult day and there were some great rounds shot today," Kelly said.  "It just shows you the strength of the conference, you can tell with all the teams bunched together.  Throughout the spring, we've improved many parts of our game; we just need to pull it together for tomorrow."

The Big 12 Championships conclude Sunday and the Buffs will again be part of the first three groups to begin the day along with Kansas State and Iowa State.  Pytlewski will tee off at 8 a.m. with Simich slated for 8:10 a.m., Doyle for 8:20 a.m., Kim for 8:30 a.m. and Talley for 8:40 a.m.

"Tomorrow I'm just going to treat it like match play with the players in my group," Simich said.  "We know we're only a few shots out of second place, so that will be our goal, to go out there and play solid."
