Buffs Shut Out Wyoming 2-0
August 22, 2010 | Soccer
BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team shut out the University of Wyoming 2-0 in the regular season home opener Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.
Colorado (1-0) took control of the game early. Senior Kym Lowry scored the first goal for the Buffaloes with an assist from Caroline Danneberg who outran the defense down the left sideline. She crossed the ball to Erin Bricker, but Lowry called for the ball and put it in the back of the net, 16:03 into the first half.
"It was a perfect ball across, it couldn't have been any better," said Lowry.
CU remained up 1-0 at the half, and the defense held the Cowgirls to only four shots in the first period while the Buffs managed eight shots, five of them on goal.
Halfway through the second frame, Lowry found herself in another play that resulted in a Colorado goal. Lowry stole the ball from a Wyoming attacker and sliced through the defense along the right sideline. She crossed the ball to Shaye Marshall who had found an opening inside the goal box. Marshall took Lowry's perfect pass, sending the ball past the goalie on the left side during the 73rd minute of play.
"Shaye's goal is as good as you'll ever see it at the college level, and Kym's service made it easier," said coach Bill Hempen.
CU's intensity was obvious as they outshot Wyoming 23-7 in the 90-minutes of play. Anne Stuller led the team with six shots during her first game as a Buffalo.
"Overall, it was not bad for the first time out when it really meant something," said Hempen.
The Buffaloes have a 10-4-1 record during home openers in their 15 years as a program, and are unbeaten in the last seven.
CU will return to Prentup Field on Sunday, Aug. 29 to take on Northern Colorado at 1p.m. for Back to School Day. The first 250 kids 13 and under to arrive will receive a free CU folder and pencil.
