October 14, 2011 | Tennis
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - University of Colorado sophomore Winde Janssens' bid for her fourth straight victory in three days came to an end Friday afternoon, falling to top-seed Anastasia Putilina of Utah, 1-6, 6-0, 0-6 in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
"It was a great effort by Winde," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "She is really seeing and experiencing what level she can play at and it is fun watching her get there."
Putilina, a senior from Belgorod, Russia and No. 64 nationally, hadn't dropped a set in her first two opening round matches, was pushed to the limit by the sophomore from Peer, Belgium losing the second set 6-0.
Putilina, the top-seeded women's player in the field, was a singles finalist a year ago at the ITA regional, also played in Las Vegas. She improves to 5-3 with four of her victories coming in straight sets.
Friday's match was the first time this fall season Janssens has played a three-set match and drops to 5-2 this season. Her two-year fall record is an impressive 9-4 mark.
In consolation backdraw matches, Janssens and senior Ania Anuszkiewicz defeated Desiree Tran and Lisa Waldron of BYU, 8-4. CU also claimed another doubles win with sophomores Carla Manzi Tenorio and Kristina Schleich defeating Maria Sablina and Michaela Oldani of New Mexico, 8-4.
In singles play, Manzi Tenorio lost to Denver's Gabriella Boboc, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(4).
Colorado returns to action Nov. 4-6 at the UCI Invitational in Irvine to close out the 2011 portion of the season.
