Pixler Clocks World Leading 5k Time at Stanford Invite
March 26, 2011 | Track and Field
PALO ALTO, Calif. - University of Colorado graduate student Jessica Pixler recorded the fastest time in the world this season in the women's 5,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational on Friday night.
Pixler crossed the finish in 15 minutes, 25.58 seconds, finishing over seven seconds ahead of the runner-up, adidas' Jen Rhines (15:32.70). Prior to Pixler's race, the top time in the world was held by Brazil's Simone De Silva at 15:27.69. That time was recorded two weeks ago in Sao Paolo.
Pixler ran an impressive race as she finished well over 40 seconds ahead of the next collegiate finisher, Washington's Megan Goethals, who recorded a time of 16:06.64.
The time was the fourth fastest time ever run by a Buff and she also became the third fastest performer at CU in the event. The only two Buffs to ever run faster times were Jenny Barringer (15:05.25 and 15:07.64) and Sara (Gorton) Slattery (15:24.97).
"I'm pretty happy about this race," Pixler said. "You never know how a race is going to play out. I felt good and with 500 to go I was still feeling really strong and it was just kind of my day. I was fortunate to make the most out of this race."
The mark is a personal best for Pixler. Her previous best was 15:44.07, which she set in 2010 as a member of the Seattle Pacific track and field team.
The Buffs also had a pair of women racing in the 10k, Laura Thweatt and Camille Logan. The pair finished 2-3, respectively, in the second section of the race. Thweatt became the 10th fastest performer in the event with a personal best of 34:33.08 and Logan earned the 11th spot on the CU list with a PR of 34:33.24. Wisconsin's Caitlin Comfort won the section in 34:25.82.
Colorado's men also had a good performance at the meet, finishing 1-2-3-6 in the second section of the 10k. Joe Bosshard led the way for the Buffs, crossing the finish in 29:10.85. Andy Wacker was right on his tail, finishing just .04 behind Bosshard (29:10.89). Richard Medina was only four seconds off their pace as he clocked a time of 29:14.91. Matt Tebo also had a good performance, finishing sixth with a mark of 29:30.09.
The Buffs had a couple of athletes compete at the CSU-Pueblo Open on Saturday afternoon but were led by assistant coach Drew Morano and volunteer assistant coach Jeremy Dodson. Morano won the 400-meter dash in a stadium record time of 47.07 and Dodson placed second in 48.40. Dodson did win the 200, his specialty, in 21.97, while Morano was third overall (21.97).
Colorado will send its multi-events athletes to compete at the Jim Click meet in Tucson, Ariz. April 1 and 2. The next meet for the full squad is the CU Invitational at Potts Field in Boulder on April 9.
