Netters Drop 6-1 Match

April 01, 2011 | Tennis

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team lost the doubles point, then five of six singles points, falling 6-1 to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, Friday afternoon at the South Campus Courts.

The loss is Colorado's ninth in a row, tying the longest such streak since 1977-78. The Buffs record drops to 3-12 overall and 0-5 in the Big 12 Conference. For Oklahoma State, the victory ends a three-match slide improving 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the Big 12.

"I think we really came out and gave them a good fight," said Colorado head coach Nicole Kenneally. "We had a lot of sets where we had our opportunities. Having our four freshmen in there was good experience for them. Ultimately, we continue to learn how to compete well and we are looking forward to our next opportunity to test ourselves."

The Cowgirls took the early lead in the match winning doubles point 2-1. Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana gave Oklahoma State the early lead in doubles play defeating CU freshmen Kristina Schleich and Winde Janssen, 8-4 in No. 2 doubles. The Buffaloes quickly evened the score as freshman Carla Manzi Tenorio and senior Abbie Probert held on in No. 1 doubles, defeating OSU's Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Sasha Belova, 8-6, but the Cowgirls got the better of the Buffs in No. 3 doubles as C.C. Sardinha and Lela Simmons defeated freshman Kristina Barber and junior Michala Hedelund Jensen, 8-4.

While CU played OSU tough in doubles, the Cowgirls ran away with the overall match in singles play with five wins. In those victories, Oklahoma State won every set by at least two points.

Colorado's only match victory of the day came at No. 1 singles in which Schleich held off comebacks from Shatkovskaya in both the first and second sets for the 6-4, 6-3 win. Schleich's win ends her five match singles losing streak and is her third victory in the No. 1 singles spot this season.

"I think that was a great match for her, a great victory for her," Kenneally said of Schleich's win in No. 1 singles. "As a freshman and playing in this league at the No. 1 singles spot, there is a lot of upperclassman, a lot of seniors and she keeps plugging away. She had a tight loss last Sunday and she turned it around today and got the win."

Colorado will now head to Kansas for two matches next weekend. The Buffs will play the No. 31 Kansas State Wildcats on Friday Apr. 8 at noon in Manhattan before playing the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday Apr. 10 at 10 a.m. in Lawrence.

CU's next home match will be on Apr. 15 versus No. 45 Texas Tech.
