Coburn Clocks 2011 World-Leading Steeple Time

May 01, 2011 | Track and Field

PALO ALTO, Calif. -Emma Coburn, a junior at the University of Colorado, cruised to a world-leading mark of 9 minutes, 40.51 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Sunday night at the Jordan Payton Cardinal Invitational.

Coburn took the lead from the start of the race and never looked back. She started to pull away from the field after the first two laps, although Sara Hall (Asics) was just a few steps behind her. Coburn started to extend her lead on Hall and had a 20 meter lead on the chase pack with three laps remaining. With two laps left she extended her lead to 30 meters and with just one lap remaining her lead was up to 40 meters. Coburn finished well ahead of Hall who crossed the finish in 9:48.85.

Coburn's time was a personal record as she improved on her previous best of 9:51.86, which she set at the 2010 NCAA Championship. It was also an Olympic 'A' standard and is the 13th best ever by a Buff.

Shalaya Kipp finished ninth overall in the same race and she was the third collegiate finisher after crossing the line in 10:03.37. She had a slight stumble in the middle of the race where she fell, but quickly regained her composure and was right back into it.

Assistant coach Billy Nelson also competed at the meet and won the top section of the men's steeplechase. He finished with a time of 8:22.44, almost a full second ahead of Nike's Kyle Alcorn (8:23.27). Aric Van Halen was in the second section and finished 10th with a personal best if 8:52.53.

Joe Bosshard raced in the top section of the 5,000-meter run and placed 10th overall after finishing in 13:34.57. It currently ranks seventh in the NCAA. The time was the 11th fastest in CU history and put him sixth on the CU performers list. The time was also a huge PR for Bosshard, surpassing his previous time of 14:05.31 that he recorded on April 15 at the Mt. SAC relays.

Andy Wacker ran a 20 second PR in the second section of the 5k. He placed fifth overall after finishing in 13:41.49, becoming the ninth fastest CU performer in the 5k. His previous best had been 14:01.74.

Some of the Buffs were competing in Fort Collins, Colo. on Sunday at the Front Range Championship. Genny Mayden led CU with a second-place finish in the long jump after recording a personal record of 17 feet, 8.25 inches. Brandin Williams took third in the javelin after recording a toss of 187-03. Alex Kizirian had a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw, recording a huge PR of 175-09 to surpass his previous best of 151-11.

Katie Dreher also had a top-five finish in the long jump. She recorded a jump of 17-01.25. Adam Salzmann raced to a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (10.98).

Former Buff Jenny Barringer Simpson was named the Drake Relays Female Most Outstanding Performer for the 102nd Drake Relays over the weekend. Simpson won the 1,500 in 4:09.56 which is the second fastest U.S. women's outdoor time this season and currently ranks sixth in the world.

The Buffs are back in action May 13-15 at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Norman, Okla.
