Bosshard Wins Big 12 10k Title
May 14, 2011 | Track and Field
"Joe ran a sound race," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "We are thrilled with the race and with the 10 points."
Bosshard shattered the former Big 12 meet record of 29:23.67 by more than 30 seconds and eclipsed the stadium record of 28:56.9 that had stood since 1978. He became just the third Buff to win a 10k Big 12 title, following in the footsteps of Brent Vaughn (2006) and Kenyon Neuman (2008).
"CU is a storied program and to be able to put my name in a group like that is really something I can't explain right now," Bosshard explained. "I'm not done here. I have a couple of years to go and I want to keep improving."
The race started out with Bosshard running in second place. He was always in the top three and after 4,400 meters he took the lead and would not relinquish it. Bosshard put some distance between him and eventual runner-up Kevin Schwab (Oklahoma), and at one point in the race Bosshard had about a 45 meter advantage. Schwab narrowed the lead to about 15 meters with 800 left in the race, but Bosshard held on to earn his first conference title. Schwab finished in 28:59.85.
"I wasn't really thinking about a [Big 12 or stadium] record," Bosshard said. "My only goal coming into this race was to win. Getting a PR was an added bonus. I wanted to run a comfortable race and now I can look forward to the 5k on Sunday."
The Buffs had a successful night in the men's 10k with three others placing in the top eight, earning 20 points for the team score. All of the top nine finishers in the race were either CU or OU runners. Richard Medina placed fourth with a time of 29:16.42 and Matt Tebo was sixth after clocking a time of 29:24.05. Andy Wacker rounded out CU's score after taking seventh overall (29:30.12). Martin Medina put in an excellent effort for the Buffs despite his ninth-place finish (30:05.75). He was just six seconds from the eighth-place finish as OU's Kevin Williams finished in 29:59.89.
"We pretty much knew it would be a dual meet between us and Oklahoma," Wetmore said. "But if you scored this as a dual meet we came out ahead. I'm very pleased. The unsung success of the day was Martin [Medina] in ninth because no one has heard of Martin. He was about 40th on the conference list and to move up the way he did in the race was good."
This is Colorado's final Big 12 Championship and the Buffs got a good start on Friday night to making a grand exit.
"The Big 12 meet is always a big meet for us," Bosshard said. "We want to perform well. It's important to put a stamp on what Colorado has done in the Big 12 the last 15 years and I think we got a good start on that tonight."
The CU women also had a great night in the 10k. Laura Thweatt cruised to a third-place finish with a huge personal record of 33:49.00, becoming the seventh fastest Buff in the event. Her previous best of 34:33.08 was set earlier this season on March 25. This is Thweatt's first outdoor Big 12 honor.
Camille Logan also picked up points for CU, finishing sixth overall with a personal best of 34:27.12. She showed a great deal of improvement in the event as she was 13th one year ago at the conference meet with a time of 36:24.92.
"We knew that they would both be in the top six or eight," Wetmore said. "It was a nice PR for Laura. Her 34:33 back in March was a very controlled race, but 33:52 in these windy conditions was a really good run. They both had good solid races and picked up good points for the team."
Brian Owens scored the first points for the Buffs on Friday afternoon, placing sixth overall in the javelin throw. Owens came into the championship ranked fifth and missed his first two attempts. Then he launched his third throw, to a toss of 191 feet and five inches, to qualify for the final round of competition. In his first throw of the finals he recorded his best toss of the meet at 206-00 that would earn him his first Big 12 medal.
"Brian has a pretty banged up elbow," Wetmore said. "The javelin is one of the most dangerous events for the body. That was a big performance for him and we are very proud of that."
The Buffs were also competing in the decathlon and heptathlon at the championship. Holly Odneal is just three points out of scoring for the Buffs in the heptathlon with 2,942 points, ninth place overall. Genny Mayden is 10th with 2,899 points and Katie Dreher is 11th (2,894). Adam Salzmann leads the CU men in the decathlon with 3,590 points and is currently in 10th place. Alex Von Hagen is just behind Salzmann with 3,531 points. Eddie Taylor is sitting in 15th (3,338) and Brock Emory is 16th (3,328).
"We are a better second day multi-events team across the board, both in the decathlon and heptathlon," Wetmore said. "We are on the cusp of scoring and are looking for some points tomorrow."
The second day of the three day championship is Saturday. The day will start at 10 a.m. (CST) with the men's decathlon 110-meter hurdles.
