Doubles Reaches CU Invitational Semifinal
September 23, 2011 | Tennis
The Buffaloes are hosting three other schools during their annual invite that also features Arkansas, Denver, and Wyoming. Day one of the competition was played under summer-like conditions with sunny skies and temperatures reaching to the mid-80s.
"Today was a great day of tennis, but we would have liked to win a couple more singles matches, but overall we are playing solid points and this early in the year that's what we want," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "We're playing against three solid teams, so it's going to be pretty even across the board."
Saturday's play will begin with doubles at 9 a.m. with the main draw and consolation rounds, followed by two rounds of singles. The final day will consist of one round of doubles and one round of singles.
The morning doubles round proved to be CU's strongest event on day one with Manzi Tenorio and Schleich winning back-to-back morning matches to move into Saturday's Silver Bracket semifinals. The CU tandem defeated Laurie Gingras and Catherine Parenteau of Arkansas, 8-5, then shutout, Denver's Elena Najera-Salas and Caroline Schnell, 8-0.
Manzi Tenorio has won all six doubles matches she has played in this fall season. She teamed with sophomore Winde Janssens and won the Doubles A bracket at the Kansas Invitational last weekend with four straight victories.
Schleich was the lone CU singles winner on the day as she defeated DU's Emma Isberg, 6-1, 6-2 in the Gold Bracket.
Other Buff players in action who came up short on Friday were redshirt-sophomore Erin Sanders falling to DU's Elena Najera-Salas, 6-2, 7-6(0) in the Gold Bracket, as did senior Ania Anuszkiewicz falling to Wyoming's Veronica Popovici, 6-0, 6-2; and Manzi Tenorio lost to Wyoming's Simona Synkova, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, the team of Sanders and Anuszkiewicz fell to DU's Saari-Bystrom/Isberg, 8-3.
CU played without three of their student-athletes due to injuries (Janssens, sophomore Kristina Barber and freshman Ashley Tiefel).
