CU Shuts Out CSU 2-0 In Home Opener

August 22, 2014 | Soccer

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 victory over rival Colorado State on Friday at Prentup Field in the first match of the Colorado Cup.

After a back-and-forth first half where neither team scored, Colorado came out on the attack and broke the 0-0 tie midway through the second frame.  CU sophomore Mikaela Kraus found sophomore Brie Hooks darting down the field as she entered Colorado State's goal box. Hooks made a move around two players and took a shot. Her shot hit the top cross bar and bounced in during the 73rd minute of play.

"It was nice to get that first goal in the second half and finally settle in and relax a bit," said Hooks. "I think it calmed us down."

It was only five minutes later when freshman Brittney Stark, making her collegiate debut, recorded her first goal to put the Buffaloes up 2-0. CU forward Madison Krauser crossed the ball in front of the Rams' goal and Stark nailed the shot in the right corner of the net.

"There's nothing better than getting to score a goal, especially in my first collegiate game," said Stark. "I am lucky that I have such good teammates to prepare such good balls and make me feel comfortable."

The Buffaloes dominated on the offensive side in their first meeting against Colorado State, outshooting the Rams 22-3. CU also took care of business on defense, as goalkeeper Kate Scheele faced only two shots on goal and saved them both in her first game as a Buffalo.

"Defensively, I thought we did a good job," CU head coach Danny Sanchez said. "I thought we created a lot of quality opportunities and got a couple [goals]. It's a good start, but plenty to work on."

The Buffaloes improved to 14-4-1 in home openers in their 19 years as a program and are unbeaten in the last 11.

Prior to Friday's match, the Buffs unveiled their 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 banner in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 fans.

Colorado returns to Prentup Field on Sunday, Aug. 24, where they will play Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. The Buffs are a perfect 7-0 in the series against the Bears, shutting out UNC all seven times.
