CU Falls 2-1 In Double Overtime
September 06, 2014 | Soccer
BOULDER – The University of Colorado soccer team played its longest match of the season on Friday and fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 2-1 in double overtime.
The Buffs and their former Big 12 Conference rival were knotted at 1-1 until the 102nd minute when Kansas' leading scorer Liana Salazar buried her sixth goal of the year, giving the Jayhawks' the 2-1 road win. KU forward Ali Kimura recorded the assist when her right to left cross found Salazar who punched the ball in the right corner of the net.Â
"It's disappointing to lose at home and lose in that fashion," said CU head coach Danny Sanchez. "That's the nature of the match. We didn't do enough when it mattered and they scored a good goal. We left their best player alone and we can't do that."
The Jayhawks remain undefeated, improving to 5-0 and the Buffs are now 3-2 through five matches.
After an evenly matched first half of play in which both teams were held scoreless, Kansas struck first in the 69th minute. The Jayhawks' forward Lois Heuchan picked-up a loose ball inside the Buffs' goal box and fired it into net to put KU out in front 1-0.Â
The Buffs found themselves trailing at home for the first time this season until CU freshman Joss Orejel connected with forward Brie Hooks. Orejel launched a long pass to Hooks who controlled the ball as she sped down the right side of the field. The Washington native drilled her shot past Kansas' goalkeeper, notching her second goal of the year and tying the match 1-1 with only nine minutes left in regulation.
The match headed to overtime after the Buffaloes' goalkeeper Kate Scheele made a save late in the second period, not allowing Kansas to capitalize on a free kick in front of CU's goal box.Â
The Buffs fought hard in the extra periods, but unfortunately could not find the back of the net before Kansas ended the match only 2 minutes into the second overtime.
"I think today we are actually coming off this with a positive look," said Scheele. "We get to play on Sunday and we're biting at the bit to get back out there. I think overall our morale is good."
It was the first home loss for the Buffs in 2014.
"The silver lining to this is that we get to play again on Sunday," said Sanchez. We have an opportunity in less than 48 hours to get back at it."
Friday's match marked the 17th meeting between the Buffs and Jayhawks and the first time both teams had faced each other since CU left the Big 12 Conference after the 2010 season.
Colorado holds a 9-7-1 series advantage over the Jayhawks.
The Buffaloes continue their homestand at Prentup Field on Sunday, Sept. 7 when they battle the Detroit Titans at 1 p.m. Sunday will be only the second meeting between the Buffs and Titans. The two programs last met in 2005 when CU defeated Detroit 3-0 at home.
The first 200 fans who bike to Prentup for Sunday's match will receive a free CU t-shirt.
