Buffs Snap Losing Streak, Win 3-0

September 07, 2014 | Soccer

BOULDER – The University of Colorado soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Detroit Titans on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.

The Buffaloes jumped out to an early lead when senior Carly Bolyard scored her team-leading third goal of the season in only the fourth minute of the match. Sophomore Brie Hooks crossed the ball from right to left and found Bolyard outside Detroit's goal box. Bolyard got a nice foot on the ball and put it inside the left goal post, giving Colorado the 1-0 advantage.

"We knew we needed to come out today and play well and I thought we did," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "It's a little warm, it's a Sunday game so the legs are going to go a little bit quicker and I thought getting some fresh legs and an early goal from Carly was a key for the match. It's always good to win."

The Buffaloes improved to 3-1 at home and 4-2 overall. The loss for the Titans drops them to 1-3-1 on the season.

Colorado kept the momentum going after halftime, scoring two more goals.

CU took a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute behind senior Brooke Rice's first goal as a Buffalo. Colorado defender Alex Huynh passed the ball to Rice as she entered the Titans' goal box. In an attempt to break-up the play, Detroit's goalkeeper Marian Manzo came running out to attack the ball, but Rice kept control and lofted the ball over Manzo's head into the back of the net.

The Buffs outshot the Titans 21-4 and recorded a season-high 12 shots on goal.

Junior Emily Paxton all but put the match away for Colorado ten minutes later when she also notched her first goal of the season. Off a double assist from forward Darcy Jerman and Brooke Rice, Paxton headed the ball past the Titans' goalkeeper giving CU a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Colorado also turned in a strong defensive performance, holding Detroit to only four shots, all of which came in the second half.

The Buffs will now shift their focus to their next match against the University of Denver Pioneers in the third game of the Colorado Cup on Friday, Sept. 7.

"It was a good performance, but it's all about Denver next Friday. I think we needed it [the win] and we got it," said Sanchez. "This is a huge week for us in regards to the Colorado Cup and obviously Denver is a big rival for us. So, I expect a big crowd and good energy next Friday."

Colorado is 9-8-1 against the Pioneers all time. The two teams last met in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, when the Buffs defeated DU 1-0 in Denver.

Notable:
  • Colorado is now 2-0 against Detroit, defeating the Titans 3-0 in both matches
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kenzie Tillitt made her season debut in relief of Kate Scheele, recording the first two saves of her career while playing the final 15 minutes
  • The Buffs have shutout every opponent in all four of their victories this season
