Ormeno Ruiz Rolls Into Quarterfinals At Mountain Regional

LAS VEGAS – Junior Nuria Ormeno Ruiz continued her great play Friday here at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional, winning her singles match to advance into the quarterfinals in main draw singles action.
She defeated New Mexico State's Ash Shrivastava, 6-1, 6-3, to earn a spot in the semifinals. She will face Denver's Sonja Rodosevic in the quarterfinals on Saturday and should she win, the semifinals matches will also be played against the winner of New Mexico's Andrea Leblanc and Denver's Maureen Slattery.
“Nuria is playing sensational tennis right now,” CU coach Nicole Kenneally said. “She is presently playing at her highest, most consistent level. Hopefully she can continue that tomorrow and get a couple more wins.”
Ormeno Ruiz is now a perfect 7-0 in singles action this fall, including 4-0 at this event moving from the round of 128 down to just eight who remaining in contention for the title. This was her 45th career singles victory and 75th overall win at CU.
Sophomore Tina Bokhua fell in the round of 16 to Leblanc by scores of 6-4, 7-5. In other singles action, senior Alex Aiello was in the main back draw and defeated Weber State's Megan Rindlingbacher by scores of 6-1, 6-2, while Kyra Wojcik fell to Boise State's Bobbi Oshiro, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (5).
Friday also saw two rounds of doubles action in the main draw, and unfortunately both Buffs' squads fell in the round of 16. Bokhua and freshman Annabelle Andrinopoulos fell to Nevada's Claudia Herrero and Adriana Gergilyova, 8-7 while Ormeno Ruiz and Jeannez Daniel fell to Northern Arizona's Blanka Szavay and Hanneke Lodewijks, 8-7.
“We had solid performances today but didn't necessarily get the end result we wanted aside from Nuria and Alex,” Kenneally said. “It was great for Alex to get her first win under her belt this year. I like the competitive level we saw out of everybody today.”
Aside from Ormeno Ruiz's main draw action, most of the rest of the Buffs in attendance will also play additional back draw matches on Saturday.
