Announcing Buffs Beats: Evoking Emotion Through Music

October 05, 2015 | Cross Country

BOULDER -- Beats and rhythms evoke emotion. In the sporting world, they also have the potential to dictate focus, mood and aggression on the field.

A new project by Buffvision's Max Benz, titled Buffs Beats, seeks to find what music makes Colorado's top athletes tick, and which songs have stood out in their career wearing the Black and Gold. Each feature will highlight one athlete from every University of Colorado sports team and their musical tastes.

“It is always refreshing to see the athletes from a more human perspective, so hopefully I can bring out a small part of this side of the CU student-athletes,” Benz said.

Benz believes that all individuals, including athletes, find motivation and perspective through music, no matter the genre or style. Each video aims to tell a story that goes beyond uncovering pregame playlists and investigates each athlete's relationship to music overall.

“It is definitely interesting to hear from athletes that have an added perspective of playing music,” Benz said. “It is also nice to hear from the athletes who simply use music for enjoyment, and to get some insight into how it makes them feel, or the memories that certain music can trigger about big moments in their personal or athletic careers.”

But fusing songs and good memories together isn't just an athletic phenomenon. Buffs Beats, according to Benz, appeals to all, and with each sport, viewers will consume a unique insight to something everyone can enjoy: a beat.

Senior cross country runner Connor Winter is the first CU athlete to share his musical tastes through a Buffs Beats segment. The feature allows Winter to open up about his taste for music that “get's you going” and more upbeat melodies in his daily playlists. Winter references the Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers as bands that help distract from the challenge of running long distances and winning National Championships.
