Bokhua Defeats Top Five Player At All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – University of Colorado sophomore tennis player Tina Bokhua pulled off one of the biggest wins in CU history Friday, defeating Florida's Josie Kuhlman by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The win marked the first win at the ITA All-American Championships main draw in CU history. Kuhlman was ranked as the No. 5 player in the nation in the ITA preseason rankings of Sept. 15. She was the No. 4 seed in the main draw and after losing yesterday, was the No. 2 seed of the back draw.
“It was an amazing effort with a lot of ups and downs,” CU coach Nicole Kenneally said. “It was really fun to watch her pull it out. It's definitely one of the biggest wins in my time at CU.”
After defeating Kuhlman, Bokhua went on to face UCLA's Catherine Harrison, the defending Pac-12 champion and 22nd-ranked player in the nation, in the back draw quarterfinals. Bokhua looked to be rolling, taking the first set 6-1 before falling by scores of 6-0, 6-3 in the final two sets.
“There were a lot of quick, fast points and it was a shot-making match,” Kenneally said. “We just lost the shot-making battle, but it was a great effort. We were the last match playing and finished under the lights.”
The Buffs will now head to Las Vegas for the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships from Oct. 14-18.
