Ghizzone Places Second In Heptathlon At Colorado Mines
December 11, 2015 | Track and Field
GOLDEN, Colo. — University of Colorado sophomore Andrew Ghizzone finished second in the heptathlon Friday evening at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Classic.
Ghizzone entered the evening's competition in seventh place with 2,774 total points. He needed a few good performances to crack the top five and he would get it done, finishing the two-day event with 5,262 total points, the fourth best total in CU history and the third best mark currently in the NCAA.
He began his assault on the standings in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing fifth with a time of 8.55. Next up was the pole vault, and the determined Buff delivered with a mark of 15-3 for second place.
The final event was the 1,000-meter run. Ghizzone had 4,426 points entering the event and needed a great race to finish in the top three. He did not disappoint, winning the race in 2:43.36, almost a full seven seconds ahead of the second place time of 2:49.86, set by Colorado State's Travlor Skudneski.
“Andrew was on the warpath today, PRing in a couple more events,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “He just missed the school record, but that is a great score for a sophomore. He did everything that he should have done.”
Freshmen Joseph Martinez finished the meet with a total score of 3,859. Another freshmen, Nate Gravelding, wrapped up action with 3,573 points. Sophomore Matt Walker had a productive second day and finished with 3,369 points.
Senior Abrianna Torres followed up last night's win in the pentathlon, which was also third in the NCAA, by recording a mark of 19-2.50 in the open long jump, which was good for a third place finish.
“The whole group did really well the last couple of days,” Malone said. “Opening up at this level for Andrew and Abrianna says some really good things about where they should be in a few months.”
Down the road in at the U.S. Air Force Cadet Fieldhouse at the U.S. Air Force Academy, the Buffs had several sprinters competing.
The CU women only ran in the 300-meters, but both women finished in the top three. Sophomore Alexandria Peters won the race with a time of 40.22. Not to be outdone her teammate freshmen Gabby Scott finished third in 41.97.
For the CU men, junior Darrin Haynes finished first in the 300 with a time of 35.23, while Austin Mitsch was fifth in 35.62. Mitsch also ran in the 60, and led the Buffs with an eighth place finish in 6.98. Freshman Alex Billing ran his first race for the Buffs, running the 60-meter hurdles. He tied for fifth with a time of 8.48.
The Buffs also sent several throwers up to Laramie, Wyo. to compete at the Wyoming Power Meet.
Senior Sophie Hallam-Eames provided the best performance for the women in the weight throw, finishing second with a PR of 58-6.50. Elisa Grandemange was sixth (49-2.25) and Delaney Hall was eighth (31-6.50).
Senior Brady Rutt led the men, finishing third in the weight throw with a mark of 58-10.75. Sophomore Matthew Denton also recorded a PR, finishing fourth in the weight throw (45-4.50). Austin Swanson and Grayson Webber were fifth and sixth, respectively in the event. Swanson had a throw of 37-5 and Webber finished with a mark of 32-9.
