Hurysz Sets CU Mile Record
February 14, 2015 | Track and Field
SEATTLE — University of Colorado senior Jake Hurysz ran his first mile run in a Buffs' uniform here Saturday at the Husky Classic and it is one he will remember for quite some time as he broke a nine-year-old CU record.
Hurysz clocked in at 3 minutes, 58.13 seconds to take fifth in the top section of the mile. He cruised past Stephen Pifer's previous record of 3:59.55, which was also set at the Husky Classic on February 11, 2006. Hurysz and Pifer are the only two Buffaloes who have ever finished the mile under four minutes. The time currently ranks 10th in the NCAA Division I standings.
"No doubt the highlight of today was Jake's new school mile record,” coach Mark Wetmore said. “Stephen Pifer called him within just a few minutes of losing the record. There are a lot of pretty big names behind Jake on the CU all-time list. He has worked hard and had some disappointments along the way, so I was happy for him to get to be the star for the day.”
The Husky Classic is a huge meet and attracts some of the best distance competition during the indoor season, which makes it a great meet for the Buffs.
"Annually, this is the weekend we break the distance runners out from their post-cross country break,” Wetmore said. “This venue is historically fast, and they get excited to come here.”
The women didn't set any records, but also had nice performances. Redshirt freshman Erin Clark and freshman Kaitlyn Benner went 1-2 in the fifth section of the women's 3,000-meter run. Overall, Clark's time of 9:23.77 was 16th and Benner was 17th with a time of 9:24.20. The duo ranks 10th and 11th, respectively, on CU's all-time performers list.
A trio of CU women took the top three spots in the second section of the women's 3k earlier in the day. Sophomore Melanie Nun won the section in 9:36.97, while redshirt freshman Eryn Blakely was second in 9:37.24. Freshman Mackenzie Caldwell placed third in 9:42.23. Overall, Nun was 40th, Blakely was 42nd and Caldwell placed 46th overall.
"We had a lot of satisfying races today, many by the younger folks,” Wetmore explained. “Kaitlyn, who was the star a week ago in the cross country race in Boulder, moved seamlessly onto the track with a very nice 3k., just behind Erin who is in her freshman indoor track season as well. Three other young women went one-two-three in another heat. The times aren't NCAA qualifying marks, but very nice marks for novices.”
On the men's side, freshman Paul Miller led the way for the Buffs in the 3k with a PR of 8:15.68, which was seventh in the third heat and 39th overall. Sophomore Adam Peterman was 44th overall in 8:16.33.
"Some of the young guys ran well also,” Wetmore said. “Paul Miller, like Kaitlyn, bounced back well from the hard cross country run last week. I'm sure some of our opponents are wondering where he came from.”
CU also did well in the sprints. Sophomore Jaron Thomas placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.16 seconds. He advanced to the finals after finishing fourth in the prelims in 8.26. Redshirt freshman Ana Holland also had success in the sprints, racing to a fifth place finish in the women's 60 (7.57). She placed third in the prelims with a time of 7.53.
"Ana looked good in the 200 and 60 this weekend,” said Wetmore. “I think she wasn't as happy with them as I was, but she has been away from races for a long time and is pretty rusty. She will keep getting better.”
In the 400-meter dash, the Buffs were led by sophomore Jaylyn Mars' 10th place finish (49.35). Senior Lindsy Mattson ran to a 16th place finish on the women's side, crossing in 56.97. Abrianna Torres clocked in at 8.96 in the women's 60-meter hurdles, taking 17th overall. The women also had a 4x400-relay team competing and it finished fourth. Mattson, Tashay Brown, Rajon O'Quinn and Holland teamed up for a time of 3:45.61, which is the third best time ever for the Buffs.
Senior Mark Jones led the Buffs in the field events, tying for second in the high jump at 6-11.75 and freshman Rajon O'Quinn cleared 5-2.25 in the women's high jump, which placed her 17th overall. Torres also competed in the long jump and placed fifth overall with a leap of 18-5. Senior Alex Kizirian led the Buffs in the shot put, throwing 54-11.25 for sixth place overall, while freshman Mariah Walker was the top female with a 17th place finish (42-9).
"Alex and Mark had a pair of nice finishes, which we hope they can repeat or improve upon in two weeks at the conference meet,” said Wetmore. "All-in-all this was a useful and fun trip. But now it's back to work.”
