Tennis Drops 6-1 Match to No. 10 Stanford

March 07, 2015 | Tennis

PALO ALTO, Calif. –  Less than 24 hours after opening Pac-12 Conference play at No. 7 California, the University of Colorado women's tennis team found itself on the short end falling 6-1 to the Stanford Cardinal, Saturday afternoon.

The Buffaloes have now lost three of their last four matches, dropping to 9-4 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-12 play. The Cardinal blanked Utah, 7-0 on Friday and improves to 9-2 overall, 2-0 in the conference.

“We battled today,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally.  “But whenever you play a tough team like this it's definitely an experience to learn from.  We are just going to take everything we can learn from the experience's this weekend and get home, healthy and ready for our next five conference matches which are at home.”

The match started how it did the day before with CU dropping the doubles point.  It would be the third time in the last four matches that CU has started the match dropping the doubles point after not dropping a doubles point to start the first 8 matches of the season.

Playing in the No. 2 spot the team of Nuria Ormeno Ruiz and Kyra Wojcik lost to the Cardinal group of Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay 6-0 in a quick 36 minute match.

Following that match at the No. 1 spot the Cardinal team of Carol Zhao and Taylor Davidson defeated the CU group of Alex Aiello and Ashley Tiefel 6-2 to secure the doubles point for the match.

The singles scoring would start at the No. 4 spot, with the Cardinal's Krista Hardebeck sweeping 12 games after losing the first, beating CU's Vita Alkhovik 6-1, 6-0.

After that the match would be decided rather quickly with the Cardinal winning its next two matches back to back sealing the win.

Nationally ranked No. 118 Ellen Tsay defeated Erin Strachan at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-0; and Caroline Doyle, nationally ranked No. 16, defeated Kyra Wojcik playing the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the victory for the Cardinal.

Playing the No.1 spot for the first time in her career Nuria Ormeño Ruiz would drop her match to nationally ranked No. 4 Carol Zhao 6-2, 6-2.  Followed by Alex Aiello, playing the No. 2 spot, dropping her match to nationally ranked No. 14 Taylor Davidson 6-1, 6-4.

The lone positive spot for CU came from the No. 6 spot with Ashley Tiefel improving to 3-0 this spring defeating Nora Tan 6-4, 6-2.  It was the only match CU won on the day.

Colorado returns home with a five-match home stand beginning next Friday, March 13 against Arizona and Sunday, March 15 against Arizona State.

Home matches are played at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center, however, both matches could be moved outside to the South Campus Courts due to the warmer weather. Please www.CUBuffs.com under the women's tennis page for venue updates.
