Tennis Falls On The Road To No. 1 USC

April 11, 2015 | Tennis

LOS ANGELES – The University of Colorado women's tennis team closed its road portion of the schedule, falling at No. 1 USC, 7-0 at Marks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 65 nationally, dropped their second match in as many days in Los Angeles, also falling to No. 4 UCLA, 7-0 Friday afternoon. CU is now 11-10 overall and 1-8 in the Pac-12 Conference.

USC continues to roll, winning its 10th-straight match, improving to 20-2 overall and 9-0 in conference play. The Women of Troy also played Utah on Friday, winning 7-0 and now have shut out nine opponents this season.

“Another great match, another great team from the Pac-12 Conference,” CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. “USC has a group of great players. We completed really hard today, definitely had our opportunities in a couple of the positions. They played the bigger points, just a little bit better. The more we play these teams, the more we're going to get comfortable playing these teams, and that's the benefit of being in the Pac-12.

“We'll just keep working.  We have a great match at home next Saturday to end the dual season against Utah. We look for forward to competing and representing next weekend. Go Buffs!”

Against CU, the home team started the doubles competition taking both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions by 8-1 and 8-0 scores, respectively.

In singles, USC dominated play from No. 3 through No. 6, winning each match convincing in straight sets, however at the top two singles slots, it was a different story. CU freshman Tina Bokhua won the first set against No. 22 Sabrina Santamaria, 7-5, however would fall to the USC senior 6-4, 1-0 (10-2).

At No. 2, senior Julyette Steur, also gave No. 13 Giuliana Olmos a good push, falling in a first set tie-breaker, 7-6(7-5), then lost the second set 6-2.

Santamaria improved to 12-2 this spring season, while Olmos is now 9-0 at the No. 2 slot and 32-10 for the year.

USC is 8-0 against the Buffs all-time and 4-0 in Pac-12 play.

Colorado returns home for its final match of the spring season next Saturday, April 18 taking on No. 59 Utah. The match begins at 11 a.m. at the South Campus Courts.
