September 26, 2015 | Tennis
BOULDER- The University of Colorado women's tennis team began day three of the Colorado Invitiaonal on Saturday at the South Campus Tennis Complex, with the goal of building on their great performance from the day before.
The Buffs would go 3-2 in singles competition and 3-1 in doubles competition giving the Buffs a good record for the day at 6-3.
"You're going to have your highs and lows since tennis is an individual sport,” CU coach Nicole Kenneally said. “Very rarely are you perfect so it's important to develop the mental toughness that comes from playing these matches against good competition. Today our girls did just that and I'm happy with how the girls performed.”
The day started with singles competition as the draws finished out. The Buffs had three girls playing in their respective draw finals, with the other girls playing consolation matches.
The Buffs first match of the day ended early due to a Colorado injury. The Buffs' Kyra Wojcik had to withdraw due to injury early in the second set of her match against Georgetown's Madeline Foley. Wojcik had dropped the first set 1-6 at the time of her withdraw.
Colorado's Nuria Ormeño Ruiz quickly picked the Buffs up, winning her match against Georgetown's Sophie Barnard in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Ormeno won the black draw with the win and remained unbeaten in singles play for the weekend.
Continuing on the winning the track, the Buffs' Jeannez Daniel defeated Colorado State's Aina Hernandez Soler in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Soler was no contest for the young Daniel, as Daniel remained in the driver's seat for the entire match.
“Nez did a great job today,” said Kenneally. “She used her great attitude and energy to get through her own ups and downs for the day.”
The Buffs next match would be a loss in the silver draw final for Vitaliya Alkhovik against New Mexico's Rachana Bhat 2-6, 4-6. Alkhovik battled in the second set, at one point trailing 2-5, but she would claw back getting the score close at 4-5 before dropping the final point and the match.
The final singles match of the day for the Buffs would be another three set affair for the freshmen Annabelle Andrinopoulos. Andrinopoulos would be involved in a battle but came out victorious against New Mexico's Dominuque Dulski 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(4).
“Bell did fantastic today finishing off her first weekend as a collegiate athlete,” Kenneally said. “She got some good solid experience against a strong opponent. It was great to see here come through after suffering some highs and lows in the match.”
The match was a marathon lasting over an hour as both girls traded points throughout the third set. But Andrinopoulos finished the deed in the third set tiebreaker and won the gold draw.
The day would continue with two rounds of doubles competition.
Starting the doubles competition for the Buffs was the team of Ormeno/Daniel taking on Colorado State Ram's duo of Laia Hernandez Soler/Maddie Buxton. The Buffs duo fell 4-6, playing together for the first time the two Buffs did play well and hung around before dropping the last two points.
Finishing off the first round of doubles the Buffs' pair of Andrinopolus/Alkhovik defeated the Georgetown team of Sydney Goodson/ Margaret Psyhogeos 7-5. After falling behind early the Buff duo worked together to come back and get the win late in the match.
The Buffs duo of Ormeno/Daniel showed great improvement together from their first round match, beating the New Mexico duo of Bhat/ Ruth Copas 7-5 to start the second round of doubles. The Buffs girls fell behind early 0-3. But showing the potential of being a great doubles team the girls dug in and fought back.
Never giving up even after facing elimination for four straight points the Buff girls scored the last five points of the match to come away with the huge victory.
The final doubles match of the day for the Buffs would be yet another win, finishing off a great day overall for the Buffs in doubles.
The Buffs duo of Andrinopoulos/Alkhovik finished the day undefeated, beating the Georgetown team of Madeline Foley/ Daphne de Chatellus 6-4. The win was never in doubt as the Buff girls finished the day strong taking the last two points easily.
“It was good to see us go 3-1 in doubles today,” said Kenneally. “We took a good step forward with our performance but there's still work to be done. We'll come back tomorrow looking to improve more in our doubles and build on what we accomplished today.”
The Colorado Invitational concludes tomorrow at the South Campus Tennis Complex. The University of New Mexico will be the only team sticking around for the final day, and two rounds of doubles are expected to be played between the two schools. Be there at 9:30 am to cheer on your Buffs.
