Two Buffs Ranked By ITA For First Time Since 2010
February 10, 2016 | Tennis
SKILLMAN, N.J. – Colorado has two players ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings for the first time since 2010. Tina Bokhua jumped into this week's rankings at No. 42 and Nuria Ormeño Ruiz came in at No. 115. The last time CU had two players ranked at the same time was the final poll in 2010 when Monica Milewski was ranked 63rd and Melisa Esposito was 122nd.
Bokhua, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, is off to an outstanding start this season, winning her past six matches and posting an overall record of 11-5. Playing the No. 1 singles position, she is 4-2 against nationally-ranked opponents, including an upset of No. 5 Josie Kuhlman of Florida during the fall season. This spring, she defeated No. 62 Julia O'Loughlin of Denver and No. 45 Anastasiya Rychagova of Kansas. Her current No. 42 ranking is the highest for a CU women's tennis player since Milewski was ranked 31st in the 2007-08 preseason poll.
Ormeño Ruiz, a junior from Barcelona, Spain, is also playing excellent tennis this season. She is 15-4 overall, playing the team's No. 2 singles position. During the fall season, she became the first CU women's tennis player to win the ITA regional tournament and advance to the National Indoor Championships. She has yet to lose a match in straight sets, taking all four of her losses to a third set.
The duo has also teamed up as CU's No. 1 doubles pair, going 3-2 at that position this spring. They picked up a crucial doubles-point-clinching victory last Friday at Kansas State in a tiebreaker.
The Buffaloes will be back in action on Friday at Northern Colorado.
