Tennis Team Hands Out Awards For 2015-16 Season

BOULDER - Colorado tennis head coach Nicole Kenneallyhanded out the 2015-16 season awards on Sunday at the team banquet on the rooftop of the Champions Center at Folsom Field.
The event was a goodbye to senior Alex Aiello, who went home with some new hardware, and a celebration of a successful season. The Buffaloes finished the year with seven wins, including two in the Pac-12 Conference, which matched the highest conference win total since joining the Pac-12. The team also had its best performance at the conference tournament as Aiello and Kyra Wojcik both won their first-round singles matches, the first time two Buffs have won in the first round at the Pac-12 Championships.
Aiello took home the team's most valuable player award, voted on by her teammates. She finished the year 9-13 in singles matches and also won two conference matches during the regular season, while advancing to the second round of the conference tournament. But it was her perseverance through injuries that led her team to view her as the team's most valuable player. She played throughout conference play without much use of her left arm, which was in a sling on Sunday after surgery.
Nuria Ormeño Ruiz took home the team's clutch player award. Ormeño Ruiz led CU in wins with 23, ranking 25th in school history in single-season wins. She moved into the No. 1 singles position and finished with seven wins at that position, including a team-best four in Pac-12 play.
Ormeño Ruiz also won the team's strength and conditioning award handed out by strength and conditioning coach Steve Englehart.
Kyra Wojcik was the winner of the team's most improved player award. The sophomore won her first two career Pac-12 matches, defeating opponents from UCLA and Southern California. She also won a match at the Pac-12 Championships.
