CU Kicks Off 2017 Spring Season This Weekend In Indiana

January 12, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER - Colorado's women's tennis team will open the 2017 spring season this weekend at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana. The Buffs are coming off a strong fall campaign that featured Nuria Ormeño Ruiz defeating three nationally-ranked opponents and two doubles pairs reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA Mountain Regional tournament.

Ormeño Ruiz's success moved her up to No. 77 in the latest national singles rankings. She went 8-3 overall in the fall and the senior enters her final semester with the Buffs 13th all-time at CU in winning percentage (.639) and 18th in total wins with a 69-39 singles record. Her combined 113 singles and doubles wins rank 22nd in CU history. There is no question she enters the spring as the favorite to repeat as the team's No. 1 player in the lineup. But after that, things get a little cloudy, but not for lack of talent or choices.

Junior Jeannez Daniel is the team's returning No. 2 player and went 4-1 during the fall season. Louise Ronaldson transferred into CU over the summer from Mississippi State and also had a strong fall season, going 5-2 in singles and 4-1 in doubles.

The doubles lineup appears to be strong this season as well. The Buffs were the only team in the region to have two pairs reach the quarterfinals of the ITA Mountain Regional doubles tournament as Ormeño Ruiz and Ronaldson paired to earn an upset in the round of 16 over the 43rd-ranked pair in the nation. Daniel and Chloe Hule also reached the quarterfinals with three straight wins. Both doubles pairs are ranked in the top 10 in the region entering the spring.

Head coach Nicole Kenneally is in her 18th season with the Buffs and is second all-time at CU with 169 wins.

The three-day Indiana Invitational begins on Saturday with doubles play, followed by singles. Teams competing include CU, Indiana, Marquette and Abilene Christian.
