Buffs Open Spring Season With Strong Start In Indiana
January 14, 2017 | Tennis
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Colorado's tennis team opened the 2017 spring season with a strong first day at the IU Winter Invitational here at the IU Tennis Center. The Buffaloes went 5-3 in singles play and 4-4 in doubles matches against opponents from Indiana, Marquette and Abilene Christian.
The doubles pairs each played two matches and all four of CU's doubles teams went 1-1. Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and Jeannez Daniel breezed to an 8-1 over Paula Gutierrez and Pauline Jahren from Indiana, but lost a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-2) in their second match against another pair from Indiana. Kyra Wojcik and Ilana Oleynik dropped an 8-7 tiebreaker in their first match, but rebounded with an 8-3 win over Anna McCoy and Emma Love from Indiana.
In singles, Daniel, Wojcik, Oleynik, Louise Ronaldson and Chloe Hule all earned straight-set victories. Daniel breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Paula Tormos from Marquette. Ronaldson won 6-2, 6-3 over Marquette's Diana Tokar and Hule had perhaps the most dominating win, defeating Isabella Franks from Marquette 6-0, 6-1. Wojcik won 7-6, 6-3 over Marquette's Courtney Hebard and Oleynik earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marquette's Lesley Foe. Oleynik, who transferred at the semester break from Cal Poly, was playing her first match as a Buff.
CU's Ormeño Ruiz, who is ranked No. 77 nationally, was upset in three sets, falling 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2). Ormeño Ruiz competed an outstanding fall campaign with three wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
Play will continue on Sunday and Monday in Bloomington.
Postmatch Quotes:
Nicole Kenneally, head coach
On how the matches went
"Overall I was really pleased with where we are. You want to come back [from break] and do a lot of the basic well [with] high serve percentages, solid returns, making your opponent beat you rather than you beat yourself. Today we really came out and did that well. The nice thing is we're starting at a good, solid level, where we've got a lot of people doing the basics well. We need to keep growing on that. Today we lost a couple of close doubles matches. When we're in a position where it's close and where it's tight, we've got to step up and hit shots and be as consistent as we were to get there."
On the play of Nuria Omeño Ruiz
"Nuria, with the experience that she has, playing a third-set tiebreaker for the match, she did a great job getting herself back in there. [Her opponent] played a great first set. Being her first match back, playing somebody who hits a bigger ball was kind of a little bit of a surprise, but it's also something we've got to be ready for. It worked Nuria up a little bit and she realized, 'hey, I've got to be ready from the first point and put myself onto my opponent.'"
On the play of the rest of the team in singles
"We had solid play from Nez, from Lou and Kyra--they were definitely tested, but each of them didn't go away. They all stood strong and when the battle came, they continually fought on, which is great this early in the season. We need to do that again and back that up tomorrow. Ilana, her first match out, she was able to work out a few cobwebs and at the same time, competed really hard. She was real comfortable on the court and made some adjustments when she needed to and that allowed her the opportunity to close out her match."
