Buffs Kick Off 2017 Season In New Facility

January 13, 2017 | Track and Field

BOULDER — In the first meet of the 2017 calendar year, the University of Colorado track and field team looked sharp, collecting numerous top five finishes here Friday at the inaugural Potts Indoor Invitational in the Sklar Family Track at CU's Indoor Practice Facility.

WHAT HAPPENED: Junior Rajon O'Quinn finished second in the high jump, recording a personal best mark of 5-9.75. The mark moved her up two spots on the all-time indoor bests list, coming in seventh overall behind former teammate Kelsey English (5-10.75).

Junior Andrew Ghizzone put together a pair of great performances on the day, notching a 22-10 mark in the long jump to take third and earn an indoor career best mark.  He also added a second place finish in the pole vault, reaching 15-11, which was just shy of his indoor PR of 15-11.75.

In the men's high jump, sophomore Duane McClurkin Jr. hit a 6-8.75 mark to finish in third overall. Sophomore Maja Wichhart-Donzo rounded out the top-five finishes for the Buffs by taking fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17-4.25.

NEXT UP: The Buffs will wrap up the Potts Invitational on Saturday. Competition from the Sklar Family Track will start at 10 a.m. with the shot put and triple jump. The first event on the track is set for 1 p.m.

QUOTABLE
CU Head Coach Mark Wetmore:
"We had two performances tonight that stand out immediately. First was Rajon in the high jump; she exceeded her indoor personal best and was close to her outdoor best. Andrew Ghizzone vaulted well, very near his outdoor personal best and exceeded his indoor best and it is only January 13."

"This facility is amazing; our opponents have been very complimentary and impressed. Everyone understands that this is a great addition to the whole Rocky Mountain region. We don't just think of it as our place, we think about it as a place where all of our friends and neighboring schools can come to and get big marks."
