Jones Named National Athlete Of The Week, Women Move Back Up To First, Men Stay Steady At Fifth
October 31, 2017 | Cross Country
BOULDER — Days after winning her first Pac-12 Cross Country Championship, junior Dani Jones was named the USTFCCCA Division I Women's Athlete of the Week. She is the first Buff to ever record the honor. In the USTFCCCA Poll, the Colorado women moved back up to first, while the men held steady at fifth.
Â
Jones won the 2017 championship in exciting fashion. She surged ahead of Washington's Amy-Eloise Neale, the 2016 champion, and Oregon's Katie Rainsberger, the course record-holder, to win the individual crown in 18:57.3. Jones is the first Buff to win an individual cross country title in the Pac-12 and first since Jenny Barringer (Simpson) to win an individual conference title since 2009.
Â
Jones led the CU women to their third straight title, defeating Oregon 53-71, which helped to propel them up the USTFCCCA Poll from third to first.
Â
CU collected eight first place votes for 355 points to retake the top position. New Mexico held on to second place with 348 points and Oregon tallied 336 points along with the other four first place votes for third place. San Francisco (317) and NC State (309) stayed at fourth and fifth, respectively.
Â
The men's team stayed at fifth after finishing second to Stanford, 41-47, at the Pac-12 Championships. Sophomore Joe Klecker was the runner-up at the meet, leading a herd of Buffaloes that saw all five scorers finish in the top 16.
Â
Northern Arizona remained the top team in the poll with eight of 12 first place nods (355 points), but BYU picked up steam this week and is just three points back (352). The Cougars recorded the remaining four first place votes. Syracuse moved up a position to third this week with 332 points and Stanford jumped over the Buffs, moving from sixth to fourth with 324 points. The Buffs picked up 307 points in the latest poll.
Â
In the regional polls, which were released on Monday, the women stayed first in front of New Mexico, and the men stayed at third behind BYU and NAU.
Â
The next meet for CU is the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Friday, Nov. 10, in Logan, Utah.
